St. Michael's Elementary School (Trail, BC) invites applications at this time for:
School Custodian/Maintenance & Groundskeeper
For 2024-25 School Year
The Custodian/Maintenance and Groundskeeper person is responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the school building, play structures, parking lot, sidewalks, gardens and boulevards of the premises. These duties are to be maintained satisfactorily to the standards set forth by the St. Michael's School Council, as well as government standards for health and care as determined by regulatory bodies for daycare operations. Such standards will be provided by the School Principal and Council.
This position is 52 weeks a year, with no interruptions and School Council expects the successful candidate to work 6.5 hours daily (Monday - Friday, 3:00 - 9:30pm with a half hour paid break). Seasonal grounds keeping work such as property safety maintenance in winter and basic landscaping (Spring/Summer/Fall) will be completed on an hourly basis, potentially before or during school hours, for a competitive hourly rate (within the Trail community). These extra hours are to be tracked and submitted to the Principal. During Teacher-In-Service/Non-Instructional Days, the successful candidate will work 6.5 hours and perform duties that cannot be done during regular routine work such as deep cleaning and extended maintenance projects. During Summer months, a list of detailed job duties will be provided by the Principal and work hours may be altered to suit the needs of the Custodian while maintaining the 6.5 hours/day schedule. Vacation will be given as per the BC Standard Labour Code and should be taken during school vacation periods. The Principal will approve vacation time so as not to impede regular school operations.
Our successful candidate will:
have general knowledge of heating, electrical, and plumbing systems.
preferably have some janitorial experience.

maintain a good working relationship with administrators, teachers and fellow employees.
have a courteous manner when dealing with students, staff, families and the general public using the school facilities.
report on emergency repairs done by others.
The Custodian/Maintenance/Groundskeeper must have clear communication and build a relationship with the School Principal, recognizing they are in charge of the school, teachers, students and caretaking staff while in the building. He/She must respect the Principal's rules and regulations and carry out their requests/suggestions. If there is a conflict, the Custodian/Groundskeeper should discuss the matter with the School Council. The Custodian/Groundskeeper must report all damage to school property with details of persons responsible for damage, if known, as well as report irregular practices by students/other persons on school property, outside of school hours. The Custodian/Groundskeeper should have limited interactions with students and discuss any student behaviour problems with the Principal, not with the student. The Custodian/Groundskeeper has no authority or control over students and will not subject any student to discipline or abuse.
CUSTODIAL/MAINTENANCE - Summary of Daily Duties:
Clean all rooms daily, empty wastebaskets, pick up papers, wash desktops, etc.
Vacuum carpets for each classroom and front entrances of school.
Cleaning and sanitizing of lavatory equipment and sinks: clean/disinfect sinks, toilets, urinals and drinking fountains each day; Disinfect washroom floors daily.
Dry mop halls, gym and stairs. Wet mop halls, stairs, and classrooms when needed.
Replace paper towels/toilet paper/soap in washrooms and burnt out lights in the school.
Check and maintain lights at fire escapes and yard lights, replacing as needed.
General repairs - keep Principal informed of requirements and hire contract specialists as necessary for advanced work.
Monthly Inspection Reports - Walk through review and inspection of Primary and Intermediate playgrounds and structures, completing the standard report for Principal review.
Recycling: Collect and deposit cardboard, paper, juice containers and plastic bottles from recycling bins.
Order and purchase required supplies
Check for security at day's end, ensuring all doors and windows are locked and lights are off before leaving.
Complete other duties as assigned.
GROUNDSKEEPER - Summary of Seasonal Duties:
Cut grass as often as required; To be done when no students are around.
Rake and clean up bushes, blow leaves from around the front of the school and grounds.
Snow Removal/Blowing and de-icing of sidewalks and pathways.
Organize cleaning of all windows, inside and out, once a year - August, before school begins or as necessary. Contract out if required.
General clean-up around the school, keeping tarmac and playground areas clear of stones, etc.
Floors to be scrubbed and waxed as required, but no less than three times a year, namely during Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays.
Holidays (non-instructional days) - cleaning jobs are to be outlined by School Principal.
