About this opportunity:

Working with the Canadian Downstream, Midstream and Commercial Deployed Process Safety Manager, the Senior Process Safety Engineer will be responsible for driving identification and mitigation oversight of key site risks, as well as assisting site leadership in promoting awareness and protection from these risks throughout the activities executed by the site population. This role will involve ensuring that robust safety process safety workflows are consistently implemented through both practical design and assurance activities. By applying true implementation of advanced safety systems and processes, the Senior Process Safety Engineer will assist the site in understanding and driving compliance with regulatory requirements and help promote application of best practices beyond regulatory requirements.

Work Environment:

  • This position is located in Lloydminster and requires the successful candidate to live in the area.

  • This role involves a fast-paced working environment that will involve collaboration with multiple team members and will include work that is 70% office based, and 30% field based.

What you’ll do:

  • Coordinate all Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), LOPA, MOC and associated Process Safety Information changes. Support additional risk ranking and analysis requests.

  • Lead/support on Cenovus’s Operations Integrity Management System (COIMS); Elements - 3 - Risk Management, 4 - Process safety information management, 6 - Management of Change, 12 - Safe operating envelopes and giving to many others.

  • Implementation and sustainment of the barrier management program at each Entity.

  • Abnormal risk condition and risk mitigation process.

  • Process safety event (PSE) classification.

  • Safe Operating/Design Limit program oversight.

  • Risk management and regulatory compliance.

  • Mitigate risk by collaborating closely and coordinating with collaborators on PSM challenges.

  • Educating site leadership and frontline staff on PSM requirements and barrier management programs.

  • Supervise industry process safety events and reports related to events. Compose training packages/bulletins to educate site personnel.

  • Leading assurance activities focused around PSM activities and contributing to the continuous improvement cycle.

  • Assure strong usage of MOC and PSSR system to bring together all changes to equipment, personnel, and procedures, whether permanent or temporary. Assurance activities to include accurate closure and execution of corresponding actions.

  • Coach and Mentor site leadership on demonstration of correct Safety Leadership behaviors to champion a healthy culture with particular focus on risk oriented.

  • Coordinate and lead all aspects of responses to facility audits from internal and external organizations on PSM topics. Complete gap closing items and implement governance structure for assisting other site employees in tracking and completing resolution of findings.

  • Encouraging collaboration between the Deployed Health and Safety team and the Central Health and Safety Team, using the Technical Authorities and multi-disciplinary support as a conduit for communication and continuous improvement.

Who you are:

  • Must be legally entitled to work and drive in Canada.

  • Post Secondary Education or equivalent required.

  • Professional Engineer status is required.

  • Process Safety related training (PHA/HAZOP, LOPA, MOC) required.

  • Incident Investigation Training/Certified Leader preferred.

  • 5-10 years’ experience in process engineering, technical safety, process safety engineering, and in the oil and gas or chemicals industry is required.

  • Deep familiarity with MOC, PHA/HAZOP, LOPA, and major accident hazard (MAH) methodologies and good practices preferred.

  • Proven experience in facilitating MOC, HAZOP/PHA, and LOPA preferred.

  • Ability to present process safety findings, reports and other forms of information to all levels within the organization.

  • Proven experience as change agent in previous role(s).

  • Experience in Root Cause Analysis and incident investigation leadership preferred.

  • Experience forming teams to deliver step change in performance.

  • Confirmed ability to partner with team members with a strong focus on client service.

  • Solid understanding of legislation and industry standards and how they apply at site.

As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of a final candidate selected for this position will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment medical and alcohol/drug assessments.

For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver's abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate.
