The purposes of this position is to assist the overall operation of The Learn to Fish Program. The successful candidates will work in a team to lead all aspects of The Learn to Fish programs, including organizing and conducting teaching sessions, maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies, and providing support to program marketing activities. This position requires strong customer service skills, communicating effectively with the public and internal teams. There is a requirement to assist in some park operations and event functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Community Development Assistant in the parks department, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:


• Prepare and deliver teaching sessions based on an established Lean to Fish curriculum
• Maintain, track, and manage all equipment required for program delivery
• Maintain accurate records (e.g. equipment inventory, attendance records) and complete post-program reports
• Deliver presentations to park visitors and local community groups
• Support program marketing activities locally and provincially (e.g. lead promotional events, develop content for online posting and e-newsletters, take group photos and video footage, and support media coverage)
• Employees may be asked to operate city vehicles based on operational needs and if license requirements are met
• Attend various training sessions throughout the season
• Provide logistical support for community events including deliveries, outreach, set up and take down
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications


• You apply your extensive knowledge of fishing practices and equipment during teaching sessions, and are able to lead diverse groups of people with varying needs through creative, engaging, and fun teaching sessions
• You are comfortable working outdoors leading large groups of participants in a lakeside setting for extended periods of time
• You exercise your good judgement while working under minimal supervision
• You are able to adapt programs to changing circumstances (e.g. late arrivals, inclement weather conditions)
• Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C certification
• Be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
• Have good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment
• Be able to deal with the public in a courteous manner

Skills/Qualifications that are considered an asset:


• Ontario Driver’s License Class G2 or higher with a driving record that is acceptable to the City
• Previous customer service experience
• Fishing experience
• Swimming and lifesaving experience
• Understanding of applicable Health and Safety regulations and Occupational Health and Safety Act

Successful applicants will be expected to meet the following working conditions:

• Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week), including, evenings, weekends and holidays during the employment period May 5, 2025 up to August 22, 2025.
• Must report to work in all weather conditions (outdoor work environment).
• Flexible to work in a variety of locations, employees may be relocated to another location at any time throughout the work-term based on operational needs.
• Green Patch CSA approved safety boots, 6”-8” to cover ankle and must be made of full suede or leather material must be worn in accordance with the City’s health and safety policies and training.
• Physical Demands: Moderate lifting of equipment and objects up to 55 lbs; exposure to vibration, unpleasant smells, fumes, dust, and flying particles; exposure to grass, weeds, trees and other outdoor allergens, animal feces and various insects.
