Under the direction of the Supervisor, Culture Programs, the Studio Arts Technician manages equipment maintenance, repair and replacement, health & safety and safe operating practices and procedures within the City’s specialized studio spaces including the Living Arts Centre and art hub locations. Additional responsibilities include providing equipment training, oversight and inventory, performing preventative and emergency equipment maintenance and repairs, health & safety and operational training and documentation as well as providing technical advice and assistance at citywide facilities that support Culture Programs.
- Support safe operations of Culture Programs within the Living Arts Centre’s studios including ceramics, glass, flameworking, sculpture, wood, photography, dance, textiles, jewellery, painting and drawing and multi-purpose arts spaces;
- Maintain studio equipment in good operating order including regular monitoring, maintenance and repair;
- Maintain studio checklists, repair logs, and preventative maintenance service schedules;
- Ensure safe operations and servicing of equipment and adherence to proper handling and storage of products according to WHIMIS and SDS standards;
- Maintain Studio Operating and Health & Safety manuals;
- Demonstrate proper operations for a wide variety of tools and equipment, providing technical support and training to users and staff for LAC specialized studio spaces;
- Represent Culture Programs on Recreation and Culture Joint Health and Safety Committee;
- Maintain safe and clean studio and storage environments;
- Document, report and follow up with required action on all equipment-related accidents/incidents;
- Oversee the inventory and purchasing of studio equipment, materials and supplies;
- Work with program staff to ensure spaces meet programmatic needs;
- Review Resident Artist and applications for technical competence as required;
- Liaise, co-ordinate and problem solve with Facilities and Property Maintenance staff and outside contractors for maintenance, improvement and emergency work;
- Fabricate equipment and equipment repairs as required to improve studio operations and storage spaces;
- Assist in exhibition installation and lighting as required;
- Assist with functional guidance of part-time Ceramic Assistant including scheduling, evaluation and hiring to ensure effective studio operations and program support;
- Provide technical knowledge and recommendations on studio renovations and equipment upgrades; source contractors and suppliers;
- Work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends to meet program support needs and on call for emergency repairs and furnace alarm;
- Provide ad-hoc assistance on projects/initiatives within the unit/team.
- Post-secondary degree, diploma or other recognized technical qualifications in Craft and Design, specializing in either glass, wood, and/or ceramics;
- Minimum 3 years related facility and maintenance experience in a craft studio setting or equivalent combination of education and related experience;
- Health and Safety, WHMIS and SDS training required;
- Standard First-Aid CPR-C required;
- Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's license and access to a vehicle is an asset
- TSSA Gas Technician 2 licence is an asset.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 33.21 - $ 44.28
