Foothills School Division’s Transportation Services department is responsible for the repair and maintenance of about a 100 school buses and other vehicles within the school division. Safety is our priority when supporting education through transportation of our precious cargo. The successful candidate will contribute to the ethos of safety through skill, training, professionalism and communication. The candidate must be willing to work in a high-pressure team environment in inclement weather conditions.

The Role

The Journeyman Mechanic is responsible for the repairs and maintenance of school buses, other vehicles and equipment. The mechanic will have strong knowledge of vehicle and equipment repairs. Mechanics work independently with the responsibility of repairing vehicles and equipment in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Work assignments will be provided both verbally and in the form of written work orders. The Journeyman Mechanic will maintain a good working relationship with Bus Drivers and Transportation Services Department staff.

Qualifications

Hold a current Alberta/Canadian Heavy Equipment Technician’s Certificate (formerly known as a heavy-duty mechanic certificate) OR, alternatively, an Alberta/Canadian Automotive Service Technician’s certificate - Red Seal certification•

Hold a current Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) license in good standing

Hold a minimum , clean and current class 5 driver’s license, with a preference of a clean and current class 1 or 2 license with an airbrake or Q endorsement

Owns own hand tools / Tool Box

Computer literate, including email and diagnostic programs

Experience in a bus shop setting as a mechanic would be a distinct advantage

Organizational and communication skills (verbal and written) are essential

Interacts with other professionally using sensitivity, tact, diplomacy

Proven mechanical abilities in Hydraulics and electrical, including schematics and diagnostics

Highly flexible and able to work under pressure in a diverse working environment

Strong attention to detail

Working Conditions and Hours

The transportation facility is located in Aldersyde, Alberta

Hours of work: 8 hours a day Monday to Friday between the hours of 7am and 5pm. May have to work after hours on emergency call outs

May have to work outside in inclement weather, both indoors and outdoors

Personal Protective Equipment is required

Hazard associated with the trade
