The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.

 

Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include:

  • Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces
  • New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine and mental health patients
  • New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces
  • New acute care tower with 160 beds
  • New medical imaging department
  • New integrated BC Cancer Centre

Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and plastics specialties.

We are currently looking to fill a casual opportunity for a Nursing Unit Clerk, OR PReadmission Clinic to join the OR Booking Department at Burnaby Hospital located in Burnaby, B.C.

Detailed Overview

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Health Services, performs preadmission duties such as, schedules and books appointments for all booked elective surgery; performs clerical, data entry, and receptionist. Provides unit assistant coverage as needed in PACU.
Responsibilities


  1. Co-ordinates pre-admission bookings by scheduling and booking appointments for departments such as: Anesthetic Clinic, Surgical Admission Program, Physio, Dietary, Lab, Diagnostic Imaging and Language Services.  Receives appointment requests, makes follow-up appointments, adjusts arrangements and assigns to the appropriate time, date and location.
  2. Verifies patient information and informs patients as to pre-operative testing and instruction.
  3. Contacts appropriate area such as doctor's office, Laboratory, Pre-admission Clinic, O.R. Booking to confirm appointments.
  4. Performs receptionist duties such as receiving and directing clients and visitors, answering the telephone, receiving/relaying messages, answering routine inquiries or referring calls as appropriate; informs appropriate staff of patient arrival.
  5. Provides clerical service such as ordering supplies, photocopying, sending and receiving faxed correspondence, keyboarding and word processing; receives, sorts and distributes incoming mail. Prepares outgoing mail for distribution.
  6. Sets up, maintains, completes and files patient charts by performing duties such as preparing labels, assembling and addressographing new charts, checking charts for completion, attaching documents and forwarding to Health Records as required.
  7. Maintains departmental filing system.
  8. Maintains timekeeping and other staff related records by completing daily sign-in sheets, transcribing rotation hours by copying information onto required forms and/or entering information into the computer according to established procedures.
  9. Compiles and tabulates statistical data as requested.
  10. Provides unit clerk coverage in PACU as required
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 12 and graduation from an approved Nursing Unit Clerk program and two (2) years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to keyboard at 40 w.p.m.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
