Position: Supervisor - Network Operations

Salary Range: Band 8 - $98,286 - $117,206

Location: J.W. Singleton Education Centre- Business Services Department

Work Schedule: 35 hours/week, 12 months/year

Effective Date: As Soon As Possible

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager IT - Network Operations, the role of the Supervisor - Network Operations is to strategically plan, design, implement and maintain HDSB’s network infrastructure across which all HDSB and affiliate endpoints communicate. Develop strategic reports and recommendations to enhance the board’s network, connectivity, telecom and cloud solutions for security, reliability and efficiency. Monitor and audit network, systems and technology landscape to identify and remediate security and operational incidents and threats. Lead cross-functional project teams to implement and/or enhance solutions for the board. Work with the Manager to provide leadership, guidance and mentoring to the Network Operations Team.

The HDSB recently introduced a Work from Home Administrative Procedure. In accordance with this Administrative Procedure and with the approval of the immediate supervisor, employees who work at HDSB administrative sites may work from home for up to 50% of their regularly scheduled hours. Work from Home arrangements may change based on the future needs of the Board. The HDSB offers funding for professional development in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment for management and administration support staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Network monitoring and problem resolution

Monitors the existing state of the HDSB internet, wifi and networks through the use of network management tools and log analyzers

Researches and resolves network issues identified by HDSB staff (as reported in the HDSB ticketing system)

Identifies network software/hardware issues and resolves via configuration, physical replacement, or use of third party partners (e.g., Cogeco for board WAN)

Analyzes, identifies and proactively acts upon trends in the HDSB network that will degrade service to the end users

Liaises with schools, management and Information Services Security Operations team when identified network issues are the result of the actions of a threat actor

Network Infrastructure assessment, design and implementation

Analyzes, identifies and defines changes to the existing network architecture and infrastructure to better serve the current and future needs of the user community and ensure board adherence to Ministry of Education requirements.

Analyzes network trends and defines the hardware, software and infrastructure required to maintain a high service level to our customers (e.g., Assessment, Infrastructure Design)

Defines the process for the infrastructure changes and performs those changes by upgrading hardware, changing network topologies, and configuration (Implementation)

Develops and informs on network strategic and lifecycle direction

Network hardware configuration, documentation, and maintenance

Reviews and implements new code on all devices in order to solve problems, implement new features and maintain contractual support

Audits, modifies and upgrades configurations of network infrastructure to meet the needs of the current network

Reviews and maintains all network appliances and infrastructure (e.g., patching, version control)

Maintains documentation on the configuration and connectivity of the core network components

Performs regular backups of all core network components

Responsible for ensuring asset and lifecycle management of network device inventories and configurations

Develops, audits and ensures adherence to established configuration and change management processes to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure

Works with external vendors/service providers to identify, plan and resolve issues with the Board’s current network architecture

Collaborates with the Information Services Security Operations team to implement new network oriented security protocols

Advising, Teaching and Mentoring

Provide mentorship for Information Services team members to support the enterprise infrastructure (e.g., network and server environment(s)), systems and applications

Leads cross departmental teams to investigate issues and ensure their successful resolution

Develops and delivers training for Network Operations staff on enterprise applications, network infrastructure, procedures, and technical best practices & security related issues

Collaborates with and participates in sessions with departments/schools to identify training needs and creates and leads customized training sessions

Meet with departments to complete business analysis of workflows and business needs to prioritize optimization and develop secure and efficient processes to support board operations

Software customization and scripting

Customizes network management software to adapt to the evolving monitoring thresholds

Creates scripts to enhance software and configuration delivery to network hardware

Develops baseline reports and scripting to identify trends and analyze data

Supervises and Leads Network Operation Team and Projects

Documents and presents technical procedures for Senior Leadership and all Information Services staff concerning the support and maintenance of all applicable HDSB technologies

Shares expertise and encourages and facilitates knowledge transfer

Acts as a senior escalation point for a variety of technologies in the board

Provides technical input and expertise on RFls (Request for Information), RFPs (Request for Proposals), Tenders, and Business Cases

Identifies training and skills development needs for Network Operations staff and recommends applicable training

Responsible for Growth and Appraisal processes for Network Operations team members

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience

Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) or equivalent

ISC2 - Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) or equivalent

Enterprise level network design and architecture

Enterprise level management and configuration - firewall, WiFi, routing and switching

Project Management

Leadership Skills

Customer Relations in a service environment

Preferred Requirements:

Masters in Computer Science

Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience with 5 in a Leadership role

Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) or equivalent

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or equivalent

Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) 5
