Job Description
Under the direction of the Manager, the Diabetes Nurse Educator integrates knowledge, skills and the principles of teaching and learning, in the provision of diabetes education and quality care for clients and families, the general public and health professionals. Teaching can occur in inpatient, outpatient or community settings, with individuals or groups. The incumbent will provide visible, proactive leadership and promote the delivery of client-centered care through educational activities. The incumbent is responsible for assessing learning needs and planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities for clients/families/health professionals. The Diabetes Nurse Educator will use a consultative approach, accepted standards and guidelines and current research findings to provide support to clients and health care professionals as appropriate.
Education
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing OR Diploma in Nursing and a Baccalaureate Degree in Education/Adult Learning from a recognized University.
- Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
Experience
- Requires a minimum of three years' recent related clinical nursing experience, including one year of experience in education or a teaching role.
- Requires experience in program/resource development related to needs assessment, planning, program design, implementation, quality assurance and evaluation and teaching adults, facilitation skills, and leading group activities.
- Possession of a valid CPR Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals level certificate.
- Diabetes Educator Certification is required. If no candidates possess this certificate, the expectation is that the successful candidate will obtain the Diabetes Educator Certificate within 2 years of appointment (financial assistance will be provided to accomplish this expectation).
- Certification in insulin pumps is required. If no candidates possess the certificate, the expectation is that the successful candidate will obtain the certificate within 2 years of appointment (financial assistance will be provided to accomplish this expectation).
- Current membership in the Diabetes Educator Section (DES) of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) desired.

Other Information
- This is a community based position providing services in clinic and home settings. Travel required to various community sites, including rural, within the Primary Health Care Networks (Regina). Home base for this position is: 3621 Pasqua Street (subject to change).
- Possession of a valid class 5 Saskatchewan driver's license and have a reliable vehicle for daily use.
- Computer skills and a working knowledge of current software an asset.
