Job Function:

Under the direction of the supervisor, be responsible for the assigned construction of area transmission systems. Supervise all levels of staff reporting through regional lines travelling crew. Administer applicable policies and procedures. Assess, plan, budget and schedule section work Be accountable for the safety of the unit. Monitor work in progress, review work methods and ensure that appropriate materials, tools and transport and work equipment are available. Administer and monitor contract work. Assist in maintaining a high level of public and employee relations. Ensure that staff are adequately trained. Provide necessary data and reports on section activities.

Job Description:

  • Supervise subordinate supervisors and crews of tradespersons including Trade Group.

  • Performing work on all types of transmission equipment. Ensure discipline is maintained through monitoring subordinate supervisor's activities, taking appropriate controlling action. Monitor work performance of crews in such areas as quality and quantity of work, timekeeping, conduct and cost effectiveness. Recommend appropriate corrective actions or feedback and recognition. Participate in personnel matters such as interviewing, motivating and performance reviews including dealing with disciplinary matters. Deal with behavioural and absenteeism problems, collective agreement issues, apprentice training, work performance and delegation of authority, as required.

  • Execute annual work program, prepare budget, monitor program status and report progress. Assign appropriate portions of work program to subordinate supervisors. Develop and implement changes in program to meet changing conditions. Review priorities and resources and take appropriate action to meet needs. Coordinate activities with internal and external forces, frequently requiring a high degree of diplomacy. Administer work management system.

  • Prepare annual safety program using corporate and regional material as applicable to meet local needs. Provide safety leadership to the unit. Monitor effectiveness of the program by observation and review of incident reports. Participate in accident investigations as required. Conduct safety analysis to identify and safeguard hazards for jobs not covered by established procedures. Identify hazards to all associated work units and advise supervisor as required.

  • Liaise with public. Deal with public in reactive and proactive stance to arrange optimum effectiveness of section operation.

  • Monitor work in progress through review of assignments with supervisors and field checks of jobs. Take or authorize corrective action where necessary.

  • Administer and monitor outside lines resources (contractor and construction). Decide work to be contracted, arrange tenders and recommend awards. Routinely monitor work in progress, check for quality and safe work practices and take corrective action where necessary. Check progress invoices and recommend payment.

  • Ensure appropriate tools, and transport and work equipment to meet work program needs are available and maintained by work unit. Take action to ensure the security of equipment under section responsibility.

  • Review transmission lines work methods throughout the region. Ensure that new work methods are effectively introduced. Make recommendations for changes in methods and associated equipment.

  • Staff training. Monitor staff needs and recommend improvement programs as appropriate. Arrange technical upgrading sessions as required. Oversee apprentice program to assure that training assignments are complete.

  • Meet with outside groups and organizations as required to maintain good working relationship and public relations.

  • Provide data and the necessary reports on section activities to supervisor.

  • Perform other duties as required.
