POSITION SUMMARY
Candidates will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. PBS Education Assistants are expected to demonstrate an understanding of students’ specific needs and programming, provide life skills training and behaviour management training to students, possess the ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with staff and students, participate in physical, recreational, and educational activities for students and provide students with a positive role model.
PBS Education Assistants will work collaboratively with the SERT and other educational support staff in modifying and implementing programs to meet the specific needs of the individual student(s), as directed in the students’ IEP (Individual Education Plan). They will assist the SERT in developing and implementing behaviour, family and academic support plans. Also assists and supports the SERT in classroom management and developing strategies to assist with the development of the Individual Education Plan (IEP). PBS Education Assistants will be fully assigned to the PBS classroom, assisting in ensuring a safe environment through sharing supervision of the classroom during lunches and breaks, and in the classroom in general. Candidates will be entitled to breaks and lunch, in accordance with the collective agreement, such breaks will be scheduled in cooperation with the SERT and coverage will be provided by Education Assistants from the Resource Room. May be required to work with PBS students outside of the school environment, e.g. independent living, co-op placements, etc. Candidates will provide observation and assessment data, record keeping, care and assistance, medically necessary interventions (i.e. catheterization, suctioning); and will, under the direction of the school Principal and SERT, assist the SERT by performing such other related duties as may be assigned.
If the EA-PBS assignment is reduced the EA-PBS will be moved to a regular EA assignment in their attendance area. If there are no vacant positions they will be place on layoff and recall in accordance with collective agreement language. This position will be for a two-year school term (2024/2025 & 2025-2026)
QUALIFICATIONS
Ontario High School Diploma or equivalent as well as one of the following: Diploma in Teacher Aide/Special Education Assistant Program, Child Care Worker Program, Developmental Services Worker Program, Children’s Services Program or Early Childhood Education Program, Teachers’ Certificate with Special Education (Core 1), or an equivalent diploma or certificate program as determined by the Board.
Successful candidates will be required to take part in specialized skills training, which may necessitate out of town travel and working additional hours.
