Position Overview

Mackenzie Health is currently recruiting a part time palliative care physician who will be accountable to the Division Head, Complex Continuing Care and Palliative Care, and the Chief, Department of Family Practice, with an expected start date of January 1, 2025. The Palliative Care Physician will work in collaboration with the other members of the Division of Complex Continuing Care to perform all professional duties in the area of Complex Continuing Care. This includes caring for patients who are in rehabilitation and complex continuing care, as well as palliative care.


The physician must complete a full credentialing application and must have their appointment approved by the Medical Advisory Committee and Board of Directors. The appointment will not be official until the approval of the Board of Directors has been obtained. The physician will be credentialed according to the terms specified in the Hospital By-laws.

Responsibilities


The Physician must demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Making diagnoses in a timely manner using appropriate resources.
  • Commitment to expert palliative care both in Hospital, outpatient clinics and provide care for palliative care patients in the community setting, ideally in Vaughan location and ideally willing to provide care in local in-patient Hospice in Vaughan.
  • Required to participate and provide call coverage for complex continuing care, rehabilitation and palliative care across both Hospital sites, as well as call for community palliative care in established groups.
  • Provide acute inpatient palliative care and consults, and family practice consults.
  • Provide palliative care in Outpatient Oncology Clinics in a defined roster, and help in the establishment and fostering of palliative care outpatient clinics for patients with palliative care needs where cancer is not the primary diagnosis, all this in collaboration with the Chief, Department of Medicine.
  • Abide by professional staff by-laws and professional staff rules of the Hospital and the Public Hospital Act and other applicable legislation.
  • Comply with scheduling structures established by the Chief or designate to
    ensure that Hospital and community palliative care services are covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Be available for consultation with professional colleagues and attend staff and departmental meetings within the Hospital.
  • Perform such duties and services as may be reasonably assigned by the Division Head, Complex Continuing Care and Palliative Care or the Chief of Family Practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding of, compliance with, and commitment to patient safety responsibilities and corresponding program plans, policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients.
  • Comply with intradepartmental rules.

Education - Certification - Licenses

  • Medical degree approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) required.
  • CCFP, ideally with PC designation; Hospital and Palliative Care training.
  • Canadian Medical Protection Association in good standing.
  • Ontario Medical Association (OMA).
