The Opportunity:

The Transportation & Customs Compliance Specialist is responsible for the duties and responsibilities associated with Customs Clearance and Customs Brokerage. Including receiving information from and assisting Internal Plants and Vendors, completion of customs documentation, processing of import documentation acting as a regular liaison with our 3PL customs brokers and internal business units. This position will assist in ensuring that all entries are released, classified, and billed accurately within service standards. This role supports our Maintenance, Sales and Marketing teams as well as assisting with Quality Assurance initiatives as they relate to importing and exporting Food Commodities.

  • Provide strong leadership to ensure timely and accurate importing and exporting of Food Commodities
  • Shape our import and export strategies to achieve supply chain objectives that drive overall MLF business results
  • Coach and inspire teams to navigate solutions and continuous improvement in a demanding environment
Technical
  • Ability to meet tight border crossing deadlines, Clearance guidance with our broker, approval of supporting Tariff Classification for confirming entries.
  • Guiding, assisting, and preparing Import / Export documentation for nonstandard international shipments (equipment, samples via Air, Air courier and Ocean)
  • Working Knowledge of IREP Duty Deferral Program / Prepare export entry copies and data for the team to report monthly.
  • Support the Coordination of R&D samples for both import / export for USDA/FDA/CFIA compliance.
  • Support the Customs Manual relating to CT-PAT compliance and our Membership in CT-PAT.
  • Support the corporation with guidance on all facets of imports and exports, Machinery, Parts, Ingredients and Finished goods CFIA USDA and FDA.
  • Manage US Export Broker Data base in ESP Online, add new Customers and New products.
  • Understand and Manage CARM Payments.
  • Research, Read and Share internally USDA / FSIS and CFIA guidance on border changes.
  • Manage the summary billing for both US and Canada duties and taxes.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Strong knowledge of distribution, transportation, and freight costing

  • Champion improvement projects for MLF Cross Border shipments
  • Ownership and maintenance HS Codes and FDA Product Codes for new US export products in SAP
  • Prepare business plans and budgets
  • Periodic travel required
What Youll Bring:
  • Secondary School graduation, CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) designation or higher
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Customs experience (all modes),
  • Knowledge of applicable customs laws and regulations relating to food importing and exporting and Machinery imports and Parts (detailed Tariff knowledge)
  • Professional designation (eg: CITT, P.Log, CITP) or Supply Chain Management designation would be an asset
  • Strong problem solving, prioritization & organization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with strict timelines
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills that allow for informal and formal networking across and up the organization
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office
  • Functional understanding of SAP TM
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and quantitative skills
  • Diverse perspective that complements the skills, strengths and opportunities of the team
