Designated Early Childhood Educator

The Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE) is an integral member of the Catholic School team. The DECE will partner with the classroom teacher and other resource and support staff to set-up, plan for and provide a Catholic Education for all students; observe, monitor and assess the development of all students; maintain a healthy physical, emotional, social and spiritual learning environment; communicate with parents; and perform duties with respect to the Kindergarten Program, in accordance with the Education Act, Board Policies and Procedures and the Mission of the Nipissing Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.
Mandatory Requirements:
Two-year community college Early Childhood Education Diploma or Degree
Proof of registration with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators
Valid certificates in First Aid and CPR
In collaboration with the Classroom Teacher the DECE will:
Create a warm, positive, faith-filled environment in the classroom that is reflective of the Nipissing Parry Sound Catholic virtues and is conducive to children's optimal growth and development
Implement and plan developmentally appropriate activities to build skills in literacy, numeracy and cognition through large and small group activities such as outlined in the Full-Day Early Learning - Kindergarten Program
A sound knowledge of play-based learning
Knowledge of related legislation and a working knowledge of Board related policies and procedures
Work with school resource staff as well as Board and community resource and support services staff to support the needs of diverse learners including students requiring an Individual Education Plan (IEP)
Observe, monitor, record and assess students by using a variety of documentation methods including developmental checklists, anecdotal reports and portfolios
Contribute to the completion of the initial Observation and the Kindergarten Communication of Learning
RECE's will build effective relationships with colleagues by using a variety of communication methods and strategies and interpersonal skills by demonstrating respect, trust and integrity
Demonstrated ability to communicate in a sensitive and courteous manner with children, parents, staff, and the general public
Strong communication skills, both written and oral in French and English
Develop and maintain effective written, oral, non-verbal and electronic communication with children, families, coworkers, supervisors
Recent experience planning and implementing appropriate educational programs for preschool-aged children
Strong organization and time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
The ability to stand/walk for extended periods and move/carry equipment for programs
Must be able to physically assist children as required (provide guidance and assistance to children with self-care, washroom routines, dressing, lunchtime and other nutritional activities and needs)
Knowledge of the Ministry of Education Kindergarten program (2016) and How Does Learning Happen (2014)
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Proven ability to employ sound classroom management strategies and build self-regulation skills with children utilizing research-based strategies
Preferred Requirements:
Two years of recent childcare experience working in an Early Learning Centre or Day Care
Recent experience in a school setting with kindergarten children
Knowledge of early literacy and numeracy skill development strategies
Experience working with various outreach and community development programs is an asset
