Hul'q'umi'num' Immersion Teacher

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Principal of Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary School, the Hul'q'umi'num' Immersion Teacher will deliver academic courses to elementary school students while providing cultural learning opportunities consistent with Cowichan Tribes' expectations. This is a full-time permanent position that works primarily at Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary School with minimal local travel required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid professional development and paid sick leave. This position also offers a competitive salary that will be contingent upon years' of service and Teacher Qualification Service Category.

Category 5: $62,188.41 - $99,819.06 annually

Category 5+: $66,326.82 $106,908.89 annually

Category 6: $67,770.45 - $109,395.15 annually

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Deliver Hul'q'umi'num' Academic Lesson Plans

Provide leadership in the integration of Cowichan culture, values and language in classroom activities

Deliver yearly and daily Hul'q'umi'num' lesson plans, as per BC Ministry of Education guidelines

Instruct and deliver artistic expressions of Cowichan Tribes including visual art, dance, and music

Modify lessons as per the individual student needs

Track individual student performance, behaviours and any issues throughout the year

Complete formative and summative assessments for each student

Prepare report cards for Principal review

Assign lessons and homework to students based on their progress

Grade and provide feedback on student homework and assignments

Implement strong classroom management skills while providing lesson plans

Provide social-emotional learning support to students or refer to internal/external resources as needed

Review student files as needed

Assist and coordinate school program related activities

Debrief with Principal, other teachers and parents if student issues arise

Other related duties as required

Provide Administrative Support to the Program

Job shadow classroom teacher to support building Hul'q'umi'num' fluency in a classroom setting

Prepare Hul'q'umi'num' lesson plans and assignments to meet regulated curriculum objective

Collaborate with the Hul'q'umi'num' Immersion Program Manager & the Hul'q'umi'num' Curriculum Developer to support and foster student learning

Co-develop Individual Education Plans in a collaborative team environment with related stakeholders

Attend team meetings

Participate in parent-teacher meetings

Other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : (please attach all required documents)

Bachelor of Education Degree required

First Nations Language Teacher's Certificate of Qualification an asset

Certified Teacher Licensed through the BC Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch or willingness to obtain TRB certification through the First Nations Education Authority process

2 years' experience delivering Hul'q'umi'num' lesson plans preferred

Experience teaching and planning with an inquiry-based, student-centered approach that is engaging and personalized to the needs of young learners

Thorough knowledge and understanding of Cowichan Tribes language, culture and teachings

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Recent success as an elementary classroom teacher of Indigenous learners

A strong commitment to positive and consistent engagement and communication with guardians and other stakeholders

A classroom management style that focuses on structure, mutual respect, natural consequences, consistency and positive reinforcement

Strong interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills with a proven ability to work co-operatively and effectively with other educators in a collegial team setting

Well-developed written, oral and presentation skills

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask
