JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Vice Principal, the Teacher is responsible for preparing, delivering and assessing innovative and culturally responsive curricula to all students at Tsleil-Waututh Nation School. The Teacher provides educational leadership and maintains a growth mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective professional development. They recognize the relationship between social-emotional learning and academic performance and aspire toward developing and teaching the whole person. By investing in the learners’ well-being, health, and safety, physically, socially, and emotionally, they contribute to student learning, growth, and advancement. The Teacher works in partnership with school staff, is an active member of the Community Development team and will follow the education work plan, strategic goals and objectives of the overall vision of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. The Teacher will create student learning opportunities that align to the BC Curriculum, support educational objectives, augment classroom curricula, and extend academic/social/emotional growth. With a focus on innovative academics and land-based experiential learning, the Teacher creates activities and schedules off-site activities tailored to classroom learning objectives and student IEP goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Following the teaching assignment assigned by the Vice-Principal and Principal.

Designing, planning and implementing stimulating lessons that are innovative, creative and create a sense of wonder and curiosity both in all learning environments.

Create an active, enjoyable and genuine learning environment that encourages student participation and a desire to learn.

Ensure all content and delivery is culturally appropriate, sensitive and significant to the students.

Consult with community leadership, members and elders with regard to culture and language as necessary.

Utilizing research-based, best-practice interventions, programs, and strategies to implement BC curriculum for the purpose of providing an appropriate educational program for students.

Ensure all lessons are adequately planned, organized and differentiated in order to ensure the educational needs of students are met and adapted as needed.

Assessing student growth through progress monitoring, as appropriate, in a timely manner for the purpose of assessing student academic progress and educational accountability and providing formal reports as required.

Maintaining accurate records of student attendance, assessment and progress.

Maintain confidentiality and required records and ensure the privacy and security of records.

Keeping Vice-Principal and Principal advised of pertinent issues and providing oral and written reports as necessary.

Participating in IEP development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation process in collaboration with the School Team.

Collaborating with the administration team and other community development staff to prepare and develop courses of study, teaching materials and programs, methods of teaching and assessment, and student support.

Having a leadership role within their learning group, directing educational staff and working collaboratively with them to enhance the learning environment and support for students.

Leading and supervising outdoor learning opportunities and ensuring that a safe learning environment is always maintained.

Maintaining appropriate student behaviour control and participation in the development and implementation of behaviour intervention plans with integrity, when appropriate, for the purpose of classroom management and providing a safe learning environment for all students.

Establishing professional rapport and building respect with students, staff, parents and the community by displaying a very high level of leadership, professionalism and ethics.

Maintaining effective communication with students, staff, parents, and administration for the purpose of collaboration and planning.

Participating in professional growth activities yearly, including certification maintenance, workshops, in-services, professional reading materials, and/or other available offerings to increase knowledge and ability to implement interventions with integrity and incorporate best practices.

Proficiently using technology to communicate, collect and analyze data, and compile reports for the purpose of efficiently reporting information and communicating in a timely manner.

Independently problem-solving, scheduling daily activities, modelling good communication, and working effectively with professional staff and parents.

Completing other duties as assigned within the same scope and job level.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Documented Evidence of:

A Bachelor of Education Degree

A valid BC Teaching certificate or eligibility for certification through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch

A valid Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) Category Card, and documentation for step.

Must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Record Check - vulnerable sector.

Skills & Training:

Exemplary teaching qualifications, experience, and training as a Teacher

Ability to teach multiple subjects in grades JK-12 in an interdisciplinary classroom setting

Successful experience in innovative instruction, design, program management, risk management and policy development

Current and sound knowledge of the BC curriculum with the ability to adapt alternative learning methodologies such as; land-based, project-based emergent and situational learning to support learning across the core subject areas

Experience using appropriate technology to support educational programs

Successful experience implementing programs and IEPS for students with complex learning needs

Exemplary experience team-teaching in an inclusive environment within a multi-aged learning pod, leading students in activities that promote physical, intellectual and social development

Exemplary behavior management and organizational skills and an ability to develop rapport with students of all ages.
