The Opportunity:

Parkland School Division is seeking a resourceful and proactive Accounting Supervisor to join our Financial Services team. If you’re ready to make an impact and contribute to PSD team, we invite you to apply for this exciting opportunity!

The Accounting Supervisor plays a key role in overseeing the daily accounting operations within the School Division’s Financial Services Department. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial transactions, maintains compliance with regulatory requirements, and provides leadership and guidance to the accounting team. The Accounting Supervisor is also responsible for the preparation of financial reports, budget support, conducting internal audits, and liaising with other departments to facilitate financial processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting & Compliance

Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.

Ensure financial operations comply with applicable regulations, school division policies, and accounting standards (Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), Alberta Education Guidelines for the Preparation of School Jurisdiction Audited Financial Statements).

Prepare and review reports for internal and external stakeholders (Board of Trustees, senior leadership, site leaders, public) as well as external audits.

Assist with the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and financial planning.

Internal Audits

Plan and conduct regular internal audits to ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial records and compliance with internal policies.

Evaluate internal controls, assess financial risks, and recommend improvements or corrective actions.

Report audit findings to the Director of Financial Services and other key stakeholders, providing suggestions to enhance financial processes and controls.

Work closely with departments to address audit concerns and ensure ongoing compliance with established procedures.

Accounting Operations

Supervise day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.

Ensure accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, month-end and year-end close processes.

Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and adjustments.

Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the division’s financial resources.

Team Leadership & Development

Provide direction, support, and mentorship to accounting staff, fostering professional development and continuous learning.

Assign tasks and review the work of the accounting team to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Conduct performance evaluations and contribute to hiring, training, and developing staff within the financial services department.

Budget & Financial Analysis

Assist in the preparation, monitoring, and analysis of departmental/school budgets.

Provide variance analysis, identify trends, and offer recommendations for cost-saving measures.

Collaborate with other departments to ensure budget adherence and facilitate financial decision-making.

Stakeholder Collaboration

Act as a point of contact for financial queries from school administrators, department heads, and external stakeholders.

Support the Director of Financial Services in communicating financial information to the School Division’s leadership team.

Coordinate with external auditors during audits and reviews.

Technology & Process Improvement

Optimize the use of accounting software and systems to improve efficiency and reporting accuracy.

Lead or participate in projects related to process improvement and system upgrades.

Stay updated with emerging financial technologies and regulatory changes to recommend best practices.

Qualifications:

A Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.

A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.

Experience within the education or public sector is an asset.

Proficiency in accounting software (ERP accounting Systems - Atrieve would be an asset), Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) Google programs such as Gmail, Sheets and Docs.

Problem Solving & Judgment: Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial regulations. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. High attention to detail and accuracy.

Impact and Influence: Ability to establish credibility, respect, and builds strong working relationships with employees, and external stakeholders. Works in a collaborative and solutions-focused manner.

Strong Interpersonal Skills : Supervises accounting staff, resolve conflict, deal with emergency situations and handle confidential and sensitive issues.

Compensation:

This is a year-round position, working both during the school year and over school breaks, as part of the Non-Union Group (NUG) of employees.
