What is the opportunity?

The Portfolio Analyst - Pension Investments will support the Portfolio Managers in the overall operations of the RBCs Canadian Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution pension plans, primarily in portfolio performance reporting & analysis. The position will oversee investment risk in a portfolio context, inclusive of concentration, liquidity, leverage and market risks, and champion programs to enhance controls, monitoring and compliance with best practices for operational risk. This individual will be directly involved in new initiatives, performance measurement and analytics, building risk policy and frameworks as well as managing relationships amongst internal & external partners, peers, investment managers and other pension service providers. The successful candidate will work closely with various teams across the RBC, including the plans custodian, Human Resources, Legal, Tax, Finance, and execution agents within Corporate Treasury to fulfill this mandate. The position will also be responsible for routine operations of the pension plans, including transaction processing and reporting requirements.

What you will do?

  • Provide analytical support for a variety of functions in the management of the RBC Pension Plan investment programs.
  • Maintain and update timely and accurate information that will facilitate investment decision-making, monitoring and reporting processes.
  • Lead ad hoc analysis of emerging risks, changes in portfolio strategy and deep dive reviews into portfolio concepts.
  • Prepare quarterly performance and risk reports for the Pension Plan Management Committee and other governance bodies.
  • Lead the annual risk assessment processes, review and update of key risk identification & controls, and ensure compliance to best practices for operational risk.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new plan governance policies and control procedures.
  • Keep abreast of cash requirements for major investment transactions such as contributions, dispositions, portfolio transitions, and portfolio rebalancing, while managing routine transactions and other operational processes.

What you need to succeed?

Must Have

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics or other field with 5+ years complementary demonstrated investment experience
  • A professional designation (or progress towards) in a relevant investment industry discipline, e.g. CFA, FRM, CAIA, ASA
  • Expertise in relevant investment industry disciplines and best practices normally acquired through experience with financial research and/or modeling in an institutional investment organization or similar environment.
  • Experience and expertise with computer applications and proficiency with complex Excel spreadsheets is an essential skill. Experience with Power BI and Python would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of investment sustainability, performance and risk analysis, including ESG integration
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at different levels of the organization and a variety of external contacts
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to identify and solve data and calculation errors.
  • Willingness and flexibility to examine and improve the current processes.
  • Drive and ability to maximize use of new and existing tools.
  • Keen interest in financial markets and investments.
