Rocky View Schools (RVS) invites applications for the position of Director of Human Resources and Wellness. The start date for this role will commence at a time to be determined, as early as June 2025, at the Education Centre in Airdrie, Alberta.

The Division

Bordering the City of Calgary to the north, west and east, Rocky View Schools is Alberta’s fifth largest school division, serving the educational needs of over 29,000 students within 53 schools, located in the City of Airdrie, the Town of Cochrane, the City of Chestermere, and Rocky View County.

RVS is situated on the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta including the Siksikaitsitapi (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, Amskapi Pikuni), the Tsuutina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations (Bearspaw, Chiniki, Goodstoney), and the Rocky View Métis District.

RVS is a dynamic, growing school division in Alberta. Situated to the east, west and north of the city of Calgary, RVS is located in an area of geographic and cultural diversity and has become known for innovative and transformative educational and operational practices. RVS is recognized for addressing the diverse interests of our communities. We offer programs of choice such as French Immersion, faith-based, online, and outreach learning.

A rapidly growing division, RVS employs more than 3,000 employees , opened four new schools/major modernizations over the past 5 years, has one new school under construction and another major addition under design. RVS’ annual operating budget is over $300 million. RVS is in a strong financial position and known for its innovative culture. RVS’ Education Centre is located in Airdrie, one-half hour from downtown Calgary.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, the Director of Human Resources and Wellness is a key member of both the RVS and Human Resources leadership teams. The incumbent plays a vital strategic and operational role in advancing human resources programs that support the success of RVS students and staff. The Director provides leadership in key areas including labour relations, employee discipline, workforce development, and employee wellness, with a strong understanding of the unique needs within a school division setting.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develops the implementation of human resource strategies and goals that align with the RVS Strategic Plan and support the needs of a dynamic and growing school division.
  • Oversees and evaluates HR operational processes and procedures in collaboration with the Associate Superintendent of Human Resources to ensure efficiency, equity, and alignment with divisional priorities.

  • Supervises and supports the work of the Human Resources team, ensuring cohesive service delivery and professional growth within the department.

  • Supports and contributes to RVS’s approach to labour relations , serving as a key liaison with unions and associations, and fostering collaborative, respectful, and productive relationships with employee groups.

  • Provides leadership in employee discipline matters, including investigations, documentation, progressive discipline, and resolution processes in accordance with legislation, RVS policies, and applicable collective agreements.

  • Develops and implements proactive employee wellness programs and initiatives t hat promote a healthy , respectful and inclusive work place culture across all RVS sites.

  • Offers expert guidance to school-based and division leaders on human resources best practices, employment standards, policy interpretation, and conflict resolution.

  • Continuously evaluates and improves HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations.

  • Provides direction and support on all workforce development strategies including retention and recruitment for a rapidly growing division.

  • Acts as a key advisor to RVS leadership in interpreting and applying employment-related legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies.

  • Collaborates closely with Payroll and Finance personnel on matters related to employee compensation, benefits, and leave management.

  • Ensures HR operations remain compliant with all relevant employment laws, legislation, and RVS policies and promotes continuous improvement in policy development and implementation.

The Candidate

RVS seeks candidates who possess the following:

  • Master’s degree with a major in Education, Leadership, HR or related field

  • Eligibility for Alberta Education Leadership Certification is considered an asset

  • Experience in a divisional or organizational leadership role within the education or public sector is preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in labour relations , including negotiation, grievance resolution, and union/association collaboration.

  • Proven ability to handle employee discipline with fairness, clarity, and legal compliance.

  • Chartered Professional Human Resources (CPHR) considered a strong asset

  • HR diploma/certification or other HR related training considered an asset

  • Experience working in an Education or HR-related field considered an asset

  • Previous successful experience in a divisional leadership role is an asset

Salary: $158,100-$168,300 per year (subject to review)
