DISTRICT VICE-PRINCIPAL VACANCY: Indigenous Education

It is acknowledged that Central Okanagan Public Schools operates within the unceded, Traditional Territory of the Okanagan syilx peoples. The School District enrolls over 25,000 students (including approximately 3200 students who self-identify as having First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit ancestry from Canada). Central Okanagan Public Schools is located in the Central Okanagan encompassing the communities of Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, and Lake Country. There are a total of 51 school sites with 33 Elementary Schools, 8 Middle schools, 5 Secondary Schools, 3 Learning Centres, an Alternate Education School, and an Online Learning School (K-12). Central Okanagan Public Schools has an excellent reputation for providing outstanding, student-centered programs in a diverse and inclusive environment as well as offering a wide range of educational opportunities for students and staff. Reporting to the Director of Instruction - Indigenous Education and Equity, the District Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education will provide Indigenous leadership and assume a wide range of responsibilities aimed at leading, promoting, and supporting Indigenous educational and cultural initiatives in schools across the District. The Vice-Principal's primary responsibility will be to foster Indigenous student success and to support the Director of Instruction - Indigenous Education and Equity through the lens of equity in Truth and Reconciliation.

In addition to possessing or being eligible for a membership in the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch and possessing an appropriate Master's Degree or in the process of obtaining a Master's Degree, it is expected that the successful candidate for this position will demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and qualities:

Extensive knowledge and understanding of, and experience with Indigenous culture, history, language and contemporary issues facing Indigenous peoples;

A strong commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, providing equitable, inclusive educational opportunities and cultural knowledges to enhance belonging, pride, and school success for Indigenous Learners;

The ability and desire to work collaboratively with local Indigenous communities, school communities and the District's Indigenous Education Council;

A thorough understanding and experience implementing British Columbia's curriculum and a strong commitment to Indigenous student success and to Indigenous parent and Indigenous community involvement;

The ability to lead various teams within the Indigenous Education Department and liaise with community partners and school teams to meet the needs of Indigenous learners;

Ability to provide supervision and support for the Indigenous Education Department staff;

Strong commitment to engaging with and advocate for Indigenous learners (K-12);

Ability to plan, guide, and monitor implementation measures intended to improve Indigenous student academic performance and success leading to graduation; and

Previous school and / or district-level administrative experience in addition to successful teaching experience.

We are looking for candidates who are committed to continuous growth and learning as described by the British Columbia Principals and Vice-Principals Leadership Standards. Members of the Central Okanagan Public Schools Indigenous Education Council, Board of Education Trustees, and Senior Staff will be involved in the recruitment process. The annual salary range is $137,931 to $145,318.
