POSITION DETAILS
Life Skills Programs are small supportive classes for student with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities and/or
autism. Students may exhibit challenging behaviours and complex learning needs. Goals of the program include
developing communication skills or communication systems for non-verbal students, providing life skills training
(e.g. self-help, personal care), functional academic skills development, improving behavioural and social skills,
working within community, recreation facilities to promote physical fitness, providing work experience where
appropriate and providing transition to post-secondary options. In addition to the teacher, the program is staffed
with SSAs (the number of support staff is dependent on the students’ needs).
The successful candidate will have course work and/or experience in the following:
• Working with students with developmental disabilities and/or autism
• Developing, implementing and evaluating individualized education plans (IEPs)
• Using Functional Behaviour Assessments to develop positive behaviour support plans
• Liaising with parents, school and district staff
• Working collaboratively as part of a team
• Liaising with a multi-disciplinary team (e.g. doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses,
social workers
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a Bachelor of Education
Completion of one of the following: Masters in Special Education, D iploma in Special Education or one year Full-Time Continuing contract as a Special Education/Resource Teacher.
BC Teaching Certificate
Registration with the Teacher Qualification Service
