As one of the largest, most progressive and diverse urban districts in the province, Burnaby provides comprehensive educational programs and services to a diverse population of 24,000 full-time and 6,000 adult learners through an established Community & Continuing Education Program. The district operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, plus a number of additional facilities.
The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program offers free classes for recent immigrants. These courses focus on vocabulary development, grammar, speaking and listening, reading and writing, and settlement themes. These classes help students learn English for day-to-day living. Burnaby School District invites applications from qualified individuals effective immediately for the position of LINC Instructor.
Position Description
Reporting to the Administrator of CCE, the LINC Instructor teaches level appropriate Literacy- English skills to adult immigrant and refugee newcomers while increasing their understanding of Canadian local, social, workplace and cultural norms. Connects immigrants to the community through field trips and guest speakers. Monitors student progress through the components of portfolio-based language assessments and provides feedback to students informally on an ongoing basis and formally through student progress reports and conferencing
Qualifications
PBLA Certificate
Blended Courses- Require LearnIT2Teach- Stage 2
Valid TESOL certificate recognized by TESOL Canada
Undergraduate Degree
minimum of two (2) years’ experience, preferred , teaching ESL to adults and knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmark competencies and associated resources OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Skills and Abilities
Able to use a variety of tech tools - Email, Microsoft Office,Teams
Ability to communicate fluently and accurately in both written and oral English.
Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff and the public who may come from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Strong analytical skill and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated ability to remain current in CLB competencies and associated resources.
Demonstrated proficiency with current technology tools, online learning platforms and social media resources.
Ability to set and maintain boundaries with staff and students and manage self-care
Ability to carry out the duties of the position.
