THE ROLE

This is skilled technical work in assisting teaching staff in the preparation and operation of laboratories for general science, physics, chemistry, geology, and biology classes. Employees of this class prepare apparatus, equipment, solutions, specimens, and cultures and related materials for experiments and demonstrations; perform cleaning, laboratory housekeeping, and minor repair tasks on equipment, order and maintain supplies and equipment and relieve teachers on a variety of laboratory assignments. After initial instructions and orientation, work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures under minimum supervision and is reviewed and evaluated in terms of conformance with established policy and procedures and effective services rendered to the school. Unusual or difficult problems are referred to an administrator.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures, materials, equipment, and apparatus used in laboratory work as related to general science, physics, chemistry, geology and biology.

Sound knowledge of the rules and regulations governing school laboratory operations and safety procedures according to WHMIS and WCB regulations

Ability to perform assignments under a minimum of supervision.

Ability to organize, set up, handle, maintain, and order a large variety of laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials.

Ability to label, code and store dry/solid and liquid chemicals as required by WHMIS and WCB.

Ability to collect, store, and safely dispose or recycle used chemicals and equipment.

Ability to provide effective assistance to students, staff and others in a variety of laboratory assistant tasks and assignments.

Ability to prepare a variety of chemical solutions, biological specimens and cultures, and related objects for demonstration, experimental, and related purposes.

Ability to keyboard accurately, operate a variety of office and laboratory equipment, and maintain clerical records and related data.

Ability to administer basic first aid.

Skill in the operation, care, maintenance, and minor repair of laboratory equipment, materials, and apparatus.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent plus basic first aid, supplemented by successful completion of a two-year technical program at a post-secondary institution or equivalent. One to two years related work experience in industrial or academic fields or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

This is a unionized position and the current rate of pay is $ 33.32 per hour and shall be entitled to benefits as per the Collective Agreement who have successfully completed the prescribed period of probation. Please see Article 6.1 of the Collective Agreement for more information.
