School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) has a continuing Principalship opportunity at Laurie Middle School in Cranbrook, BC.

Located in the heart of the Kootenays, our District serves five vibrant communities: Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, Jaffray, and Cranbrook. Our schools operate within the territory of the Ktunaxa Nation, including the communities of ?aq'am and Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡiʾit. The region offers stunning natural beauty, a welcoming sense of community, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, including world-class skiing at Kimberley Alpine Resort and Fernie Alpine Resort.

Laurie Middle School is a vibrant Grade 7-9 learning community with approximately 400 students and a strong commitment to student success and well-being.

We are seeking a high-performing, forward-thinking professional with demonstrated success in educational leadership. The ideal candidate brings a passion for learning, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to fostering safe, caring, and inclusive school communities.

As Principal, you will:

  • Champion the District’s Educational Plan and lead with integrity and innovation.
  • Inspire excellence in teaching and learning through research-based best practices.
  • Support student development in all areas-academic, social, and emotional.
  • Promote a culturally responsive approach to learning, honouring Indigenous perspectives and community partnerships.
  • Communicate openly and transparently while building positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the broader community.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.

School District No. 5 offers a supportive leadership team, engaged communities, and a stable student population with projected growth. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced administrator ready to make a meaningful impact in a progressive and inclusive district.

Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for teacher certification with the Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Must have a Master in leadership, curriculum, or another relevant field.
  • Teaching/degree/training at the middle/secondary school level.
  • Background in trauma-informed schools.
  • Social-emotional learning will be considered an asset.
  • Proven success working with at-risk students.
  • 5+ years of administrative experience.

Must have the ability to:

  • Initiate and organize effective school programs, activities, and services.
  • Be an effective instructional leader with knowledge of current research in instructional practices.
  • Knowledge of special education and current teaching strategies for students needing extra support.
  • Strong understanding of the renewed BC curriculum and competencies.
  • Be an experienced educator with a strong commitment to public education.
  • Implement strong, current pedagogical practices with inquiry and project-based or place-conscious learning.
  • Lead with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Promote and build educational and professional leadership with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Be a team builder and player, strengthening and maintaining a professional learning community.
  • Be committed to the school and community involvement.
  • Be knowledgeable of school contractual and budgetary matters.
  • Be committed to moving Truth and Reconciliation forward personally and in the school community.
  • Work effectively with district management.

    Salary Range: $153,339 - $161,780
