Our District

Centrally located on Vancouver Island on Coast Salish Territory within the territories of the Nanoose (Snaw'naw'as) First Nation and Qualicum First Nation, the Qualicum School District serves a population of approximately 4500 students and 750 staff. The region exemplifies the best of Vancouver Island living, with ideal coastal climate, ocean and forests close at hand, and desirable small-town lifestyle while still enjoying convenient city access.

The Position

The District Principal of Learning reports directly to Associate Superintendent and assumes responsibility for the administration of aspects of Inclusive Education as assigned. The prime responsibility is to facilitate and support the programming and supports for students with Ministry designations and to lead the district to support inclusive practices to support all learners. Commencing this school year, date to be negotiated.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

An exemplary record of an effective, collaborative and motivating team building style of leadership at the school or district level;

Strong knowledge of inclusive learning and of key issues in the fields of school psychology, speech language pathology, counseling psychology, behaviour management, autism, unique needs and instructional needs of students with unique needs;

Familiarity with Ministry of Education special education guidelines, relevant legislation and ministerial orders, special needs categories and audit requirements;

Experience working with adult learners to provide educational leadership in the development of district initiatives for professional and paraprofessional staff through a variety of approaches such as presentations, demonstrations, team-teaching, coaching and networking;

Understanding of and commitment to an inclusionary approach to the provision of special education services with a focus on needs-based support;

Ability to work collaboratively with community agencies that provide support services to students with unique needs and their families;

Exemplary relationship building with students, parents and caregiver, colleagues, and community partners;

Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills and demonstrated prior involvement in developing a shared vision and building a professional learning community;

Proven ability with human and fiscal resource allocation;

Ability to work consultatively within a unionized environment;

Skills in the use and application of educational technology for supporting all learners; and

Experience with current approaches to differentiated instruction to support all learners

Candidates are expected to have the following:

A valid BC teaching certificate and familiarity with the re-designed BC curriculum and the BC Education Plan;

Specific training and expertise in including and supporting students with unique needs; and

A Master’s degree in special education, inclusion, or a related area.

The salary range for this position is $157,676-$166,124 and includes a comprehensive benefits package. The successful candidate’s placement on the range will be subject to qualifications and experience.
