Position : Special Education Classroom Assistant

Term : Fixed Term Contract Ends June 30th, 2023, open for renewal in Sept. 2023

Salary : Competitive Wage

Reporting To : NEC Lead Instructor

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be required to work with specified students’ One-On-One type of teaching learning environment. Students require special attention and extra instruction to bring them up to grade level. At times the successful candidate will be required to work in small group instruction and learning activities, also some out of class activities such as field trips and overnight travel.

The successful candidate will work closely with the classroom teacher in specifying goals and objectives and how it is best to achieve those goals.

A typical day of work is from 8:30 to 3:30.

About Our School: We are a band operated, FNSA accredited community school. Our school operates a self-paced high school and adult education graduation programs. Our school has a hot breakfast and lunch program, an onsite trauma counsellor, computers for every student, an onsite cultural worker, and lots of land-based learning resources and opportunities.

Responsibilities :

Maintain a safe and inclusive learning space for all learners.

Motivate fun and a love of learning

Organize and facilitate classroom instructional services to students on a daily basis;

Organize field outings with the bus-driver, lead instructor, cultural resource developer and knowledge keepers and parents (permissions).

Adapt and accommodate teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.

Establish and maintain behavior standards and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

Establish clear objectives for all projects and communicate those objectives to students;

Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks;

Adhere to and abide by all Community, Culture and Secwepemc values

Must be willing and available to travel to meetings as requested

Other duties as requested

Skills required

Excellent communications skills, verbal and written, preferably trained in Non-violent Communication.

Exceptional organizational abilities and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines, multitask and prioritize work load.

Knowledge of outdoor education practices

Quick thinking and problem-solving abilities mediation, crisis intervention and negotiation skills to best work with student behavior.

Must be able to work flexible hours, on occasion.

Must have own transportation.

Must possess a high standard of confidentiality and willing to sign Oath of Confidentiality

Qualifications:

A certificate, diploma or degree in special education required

Knowledge of standard office administrative practices and procedures

Must have valid drivers’ license and ability to attend work
