ATTENDANCE COUNSELLOR

1.0 FTE - Temporary position (As soon as possible to July 4, 2024)

The Simcoe County District School Board is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Attendance Counsellor. Reporting to the Mental Health Lead and the Assistant Manager of Social Work Services , the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting student attendance at school using proactive advocacy and for the enforcement of compulsory school attendance as mandated by the Education Act, Section 25, and for contributing to the development and implementation of educational plans for identified and at risk students and their families.

Qualifications:

University degree in Psychology, Sociology, or a related field, or equivalent.

Pertinent Skills and Experience:

Two (2) to (3) years related experience in children’s mental health and behaviour, preferably within an Education environment;

Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team with field and school staff, colleagues, teachers, service professionals, community health and mental health resources, police and probation services to support “at risk” students and their families to promote Student Success;

Knowledge of legislation, codes and regulations as they pertain to compulsory school attendance, privacy and confidentiality;

Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills;

Strong mediation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills;

Ability to prioritize and work independently or in teams as required;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Computer literacy and ability to work with a variety of software programs, e.g. MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook, and G Suite applications;

Member of the Ontario Association for Attendance and Counselling Services (OACAS) an asset;

Reliable transportation required;

The nature of this position will require travel within an assigned district; mileage reimbursement at the Board approved rate.

The normal work period for this position is the school year - ten (10) months and ten (10) days . The compensation range for this position is $68,663 - $84,641 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. Assigned area(s) may be subject to change in the future. This is a unionized position and union dues are applicable.
