I TINERANT G RADUATION COACH FOR AFRO - INDIGENOUS STUDENTS
1.0 FTE Temporary (Pilot) position (January 6, 2025 July 4, 2025)
Salary Range: $60,125 - $74,031 per year

The Simcoe County District School Board is committed to supporting Afro-Indigenous students' academic excellence and well-being. The Itinerant Graduation Coach for Afro-Indigenous students will provide students across the SCDSB who identify as Afro-Indigenous, Indigenous or Black with diverse support to achieve credits, graduate, and successfully transition into their chosen post-secondary pathway. The Itinerant Graduation Coach for Afro-Indigenous students Program will provide intensive, culturally responsive support for Afro-Indigenous Students and their families across the board to improve their achievement and well-being. Using the Four Directions model, the Afro-Indigenous Graduation Coach will support Indigenous students' cultural engagement, well-being and academic achievement. The Itinerant Graduation Coach for Afro-Indigenous students is responsible for developing strong community partnerships with agencies, organizations, and educational partners in multiple SCDSB schools.

Duties of the role include but are not limited to:
In collaboration with the Principal of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion or the Superintendent of Education with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion portfolio (or their designate):
Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, families (where appropriate), system staff, and community resources to identify systemic barriers and develop meaningful solutions to support the engagement, well-being, and academic achievement of Afro-Indigenous students.
Work with the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Education department's core teams and school-based staff to create a long-term vision/ plan for self-identified Afro-Indigenous, Indigenous or Black students who will benefit from targeted supports.
Tracking and monitoring student progress throughout the school year to identify trends and insights used to inform individual coaching and program design and report on the program process.
Create mechanisms to identify gaps in service delivery and growth areas and gather feedback from Afro-Indigenous students, community partners, and SCDSB families.
Promote and raise awareness of the Graduation Coach for Afro-Indigenous student services within the SCDSB to assist school teams in understanding the role and building capacity to identify and address barriers.
Work with both elementary and secondary school communities to improve Afro-Indigenous students' feelings and perceptions of the educational experience;
Initiate and support partnerships with various Greater Simcoe County community agencies and groups, working with agencies to share best practices and improve services.
Create a caring and nurturing school and community environment by addressing our Afro-Indigenous students' academic, social, emotional, and cultural needs by developing and maintaining trusting relationships.
Work closely with Afro-Indigenous students and their families to identify and support social, emotional, intellectual, cultural, and physical well-being while mentoring and advising.
Coordinate local community cultural support services and liaise between school, home, and community social service agencies to connect individual students who are identified as being at risk of not graduating with mentors.
Work with the school community and improve Afro-Indigenous students' feelings and perceptions of the educational experience.
Monitor attendance and assignment completion, focusing on key expectations leading to a successful graduation outcome.
Provide leadership in fostering diversity, equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of Indigenous Education programs and services
Prepare and provide reports to the school administration that track the progress of individual students towards graduation.
Support and attend additional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and/ or Indigenous Education or other program department system initiatives, which may occur outside regular working hours; and
Perform other duties as assigned, considering the unique needs of SCDSB stakeholders and going beyond to meet system needs.
Qualifications:
post-secondary degree or diploma in Humanities, Social Science, Social Services, Psychology, or other similar degree/diploma with two years of experience in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Board;
demonstrated understanding and working knowledge of Decolonizing and Indigenizing the curriculum;
demonstrated understanding and working knowledge of Affirming Black Identify in the Classroom and curriculum;
ability to provide program support for integrating Indigenous history, culture and Ways of Knowing into various curriculum areas, with an understanding of how students develop cultural competence related to Indigenous education;
demonstrated ability to engage school staff in teaching and learning practices that are both innovative and culturally relevant to the needs of Indigenous students and the parent community; and,
understanding of learning strategies, program modifications, and teaching methodologies that support students with special needs in making connections and understanding Indigenous culture and practices.

This position is full-time temporary. The normal work year for this position is the school year - ten (10) months and ten (10) days. Please note: Summer is a non-working period for this position. The compensation range for this ten (10) month and ten (10) day position is $60,125 to $74,031 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. This position is based on a thirty-five (35) hour work week. Assigned area(s) may be subject to change in the future. This is a unionized position, and union dues are applicable.
