Sturgeon Public School Division is seeking a Full-Time, First Nations Cultural Liaison that plays a pivotal role in promoting cultural understanding and providing support to First Nations students, families, and staff within the K-12 public education system. This position serves as a bridge between the education system and First Nations communities, ensuring culturally responsive practices and fostering a supportive environment for all stakeholders.

Cultural Connections:

Collaborate with teachers and leaders to integrate culturally relevant content into learning activities.

Provide guidance and support in connecting to appropriate community members, knowledge keepers, and Elders to share knowledge and perspectives.

Provide consultation and guidance to educators with regard to appropriate First Nations protocols

Organize cultural events and presentations to enhance cultural awareness among students, staff, and the broader community (Including National Indigenous Peoples Day).

Coordinate collaborative projects and initiatives that promote cultural exchange and community engagement.

Student Support:

Provide individualized support to Indigenous students to address academic, social, and emotional needs (by referral).

Facilitate student cultural and leadership activities and mentorship programs designed to empower Indigenous students

Advocate for the inclusion of, and provide culturally sensitive counseling and mental health services within the school system.

Family Engagement:

Serve as a liaison between Indigenous families and the school system, facilitating communication and collaboration.

Organize family nights and support Indigenous Parent Advisory Group meetings to build relationships and improve opportunities to involve parents in their children's education

Offer assistance with navigating school policies, advocating for students' needs, and connecting families with relevant resources.

Provide resources and referrals to support families in navigating the education system and accessing relevant services.

Qualifications:

Lived experience and strong knowledge and understanding of First Nations cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Experience working in education or community outreach, preferably within a First Nations context.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement culturally responsive programs and initiatives.

Commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice in education.

Must have own reliable transportation.

The ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.

Education:

A bachelor's degree in education, Indigenous studies, social work, or a related field is preferred.

Equivalencies may be considered.

Additional knowledge or training in cultural competency or counseling is an asset.

Lived cultural experience is of paramount importance.

The First Nations Cultural Liaison plays a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness, supporting student success, and building strong partnerships between First Nations communities and the K-12 public education system. Through advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration, this position contributes to creating a more inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment for all students.
