Special Needs Support Worker

Permanent, full-time position

Our School Board is host to and celebrates diverse cultures and is comprised of dedicated staff committed to high quality education that inspires and promotes lifelong learning. The Board is currently seeking a Special Needs Support Worker to join our dynamic team.

The Special Needs Support Worker is an integral member of the Autism Support Services team who facilitates student success by providing direct services to students. The Special Needs Support Worker assists in the design, implementation and delivery of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies for staff to address the programming needs of students who require intensive supports to be successful in a classroom and/or school environment. Work will involve the application of the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), research-based and effective strategies to support students with ASD and other behaviour related disabilities or exceptionalities.

Essential Education/Certification:

Minimum 2-year program in a related field at an accredited college or university e.g. Social Services Worker, or related to Behavioural Science

Required Experience:

Minimum 1 year experience working in a Behaviour Analysis role/Instructor Therapist role or related experience

Experience working with children and youth who have special education needs, in particular children and youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and/or various behaviour exceptionalities

Required Knowledge:

Basic knowledge of elementary and secondary education system in Ontario

Demonstrate understanding of special education issues, including those relevant to children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders and behaviour related disabilities

Demonstrate knowledge of the relationship between the environment, behaviours and consequences and be able to make connections to strategies to change or replace behaviours

In-depth knowledge of the characteristics of individuals with ASD in order to design and implement plans to build skills, promote communication and adaptive strategies to build independence

Experience in the design, implementation and delivery of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies for staff to address the programming needs of students who require intensive supports to be successful in a classroom and/or school environment

Basic knowledge of MFIPPA and PHIPA

Skills/Abilities:

High level of personal integrity, professionalism and strong work ethic

Ability to diffuse challenging situations and remain calm

Excellent communication skills when interacting with others including but not limited to students, staff, families, and outside agencies

Excellent time management skills and prioritizing skills

Excellent inter-personal skills

High level of attention to confidentiality

Ability to define problems, gather data, plan and implement strategies and measure growth and/or efficacy

Ability to effectively communicate and relate to people with compassion and professionalism

Excellent problem-solving abilities

Proficiency in various computer software programs, including presentation software

Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle

Preferred Qualifications:

School Board experience would be considered an asset

Knowledge and experience of types of behavioural assessments

Current certification in Behaviour Management Systems or other similar training

Training in applied behaviour analysis principles from a recognized institution

Current certification in First Aid, and CPR

Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The annual work schedule typically follows the school year calendar and may include additional days if required.

The salary range for this position is $33.83 to $42.28 hourly plus vacation pay which graduates with years of service and includes a comprehensive benefit package.
