Salary Range: $45.910 - $58.914/hr
Hours of Work: Days (on-call as required, flexibility required)
Summary of Duties:
Reporting to the Manager of Radiation Safety Department, the Radiation Safety Specialist will assist with development and provision of Radiation Safety for Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) and Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI), combined referred to as “Sunnybrook”. Radiation Safety Specialist is accountable for a broad range of support, scientific and technical expertise, for the Radiation Safety at Sunnybrook, including but not limited to executing tasks to ensure compliance with all federal regulations of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), provincial regulations of the Ministry of Health (MOH) / Ministry of Labour (MOL), Sunnybrook policies and procedures.
- Ensuring that all activities involving radiation, radiation emitting devices are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations, requirements, policies and procedures.
- Monitoring / auditing compliance with relevant regulations, requirements, policies and procedures.
- Providing radiation dose calculations and risk evaluation for patients and staff.
- Responding to, investigating and performing follow up of radiation safety related incidents/ accidents.
- Preparing technical reports including but not limited to shielding reports, dose assessment from unplanned events, and hazards / environment assessments related to radiation emitting devices.
- Performing emergency response, risk management and continuous quality improvement.
- Performing calculations for shielding plans and equipment installations.
- Supporting an appropriate radiation safety training program is developed, managed and implemented.
- Developing guidelines and documents specific to Sunnybrook employees and other stakeholders as required.
- Performing other duties as required.
Qualifications / Skills:
- At a minimum, Bachelor of Science in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Health Physics, Medical, Physics, Radiation Biology) from a recognized institution, or equivalent program in a relevant imaging discipline from a recognized institution.
- 2 - 4 years of recent, related professional operational radiation safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Canadian Radiation Protection Association designation preferred.
- Must have knowledge of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, HARP Act, RED Act, CNSC and MOH/MOL regulations and guidelines.
- Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques.
- Experience working with radiation and radioactive materials and/ or devices in healthcare environment.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, coupled with exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with others.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks to meet deadlines & objectives, and analyze problems and provide solutions.
- Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
