Registered Nurse – Sedation Assistant    Department of Dentistry

We have a part-time/casual opportunity, for a Registered Nurse who will work in the Department of Dentistry at Sunnybrook 2 days/week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and casual Fridays). We are a multi-doctor (generalist and specialist) practice and an academic centre providing educational experiences for a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate students. We have a respectful and positive team and are looking for a caring and highly competent individual, interested in providing quality care in a dynamic environment.

 

Qualifications include:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing school and annual certification as a Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Ontario
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current ACLS certification (or willingness to certify)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Must be able to work co-operatively with all members of the team
  • Tactful and diplomatic, demonstrating good judgment and sensitivity for a variety of patient and caregiver circumstances

 

The ideal candidate will have the following work-related nursing experiences:

  • Experience with moderate sedation, deep sedation, and/or general anaesthesia patients
  • Work experience in ICU, PACU, Emergency Room, or in a recovery unit for ambulatory surgery
  • Familiarity with medically complex, mentally challenged, physically challenged, or geriatric patients
  • Excellent venipuncture skills for difficult IV access
  • Oral surgical or other dental procedure experience not necessary

 

Duties include:

  • Equipment, medication, and room set-up
  • Maintain anaesthesia equipment and drug supplies
  • Maintain anaesthesia and drug records
  • Assist with preoperative history-taking and patient examination
  • Assist with premedication administration
  • Assist with airway maintenance
  • Perform blood draw and prepare laboratory requisitions with doctor
  • Assist with recovery and discharge of patients
  • Maintain helpful relationships with patients and accompanying persons
