Job Description:

It is an exciting time to join SHN's Privacy and Risk Management Office. Reporting to the Director, Privacy and Risk Management, this position is the central lead for risk management insurance advice. In this position, you will play a key role in supporting the execution of a revitalized Enterprise Risk Management Framework to support SHN teams in meeting the needs of the diverse populations we serve.

The Incumbent will:

Risk Management:

  • Develop and implement related operational strategies, policies, business processes and procedures related to the work of the Privacy and Risk Management department

  • Design strategies to mitigate or eliminate risks. This could involve implementing controls, setting up new insurance policies and alternatives, creating contingency plans, or adjusting business operations to minimize exposure

  • Work with colleagues across the organization, participating in investigations into risk issues to determine cause and recommend corrective action. Support corrective action including reviewing documentation, policies and procedures to enhance service excellence

  • Oversee the review and recommendations for amendments to complex agreements and contracts which include insurance and indemnification obligations

  • Utilizes research and data analysis tools to assess risks and generate comprehensive reports, memos, reports, dashboards and briefings

  • Proficient in using risk management software to track incidents and manage claims

  • Monitor and respond to the corporate Risk Management general email

  • Annual Administrator On-Call Schedule development and day to day process management

  • Record Retention policy and process

  • Develop, facilitate and participate in educational initiatives including training and seminars for SHN user groups

Medical-Legal:

  • Monitors patient safety incidents to identify potential claims that should be reported to the hospital insurer

  • Files actual or potential claims with insurers

  • Documents, manages, and participates the ongoing progress of med/legal claims

  • Liaises with various SHN department to gather required information for legal cases and evidence for legal claims

  • Respond as a representative of SHN to external requests related to large claims. Interfaces with legal representatives on the adjudication of serious claims

  • Invites and prepares SHN leadership and staff to meet with adjuster/lawyers, and to be the hospital representative where appropriate

  • Develops standard work for managing med legals files including email communications and reports

  • Oversee the entire claims process, ensuring that claims are processed efficiently, fairly, and in compliance with SHN policies and legal requirements

  • Update policies, procedures and programs including assessment and interventions to proactively mitigate risk, including those generated from claims

  • Develops, monitors and reports on key performance indicators and key risk indicators
    Develop, monitor and report on key performance indicators to Quality of Care Committee

Insurance:

  • Updates annual insurance (Crime and Liability, Property) for all SHN sites

  • Facilitates obtaining certificates of insurance on an ad hoc basis (e.g. requests from Foundation, programs and individual staff members)

  • Liaises with Insurer on insurance questions

  • Works with teams to complete and monitor the annual HIROC Risk Assessment Checklist

Product Recalls:

  • Manages corporate product recall process, reviewing product recalls on a daily basis and manages them with key stakeholders. Develops metrics and reports on process

Legislative Compliance:

  • Continuously monitors and interprets changes in healthcare regulations and ensures hospital compliance.

  • Manages annul Legislative Compliance attestation process

  • Develops and conducts training sessions on risk management practices and legislative compliance for internal stakeholders

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent with major course work in Risk Management, Insurance or equivalent.

  • Canadian Risk Management designation or Paralegal License preferred

  • 3-5 years progressive experience in Risk Management within a health care environment.

  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management theories, principles, techniques, and methods,

  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, policies, and procedures related to claims management process and risk mitigation in health care.

  • Understand the medico legal process and experience working with legal counsel.

  • Superior research skills coupled with the ability to write reports, policies and procedures

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to influence decision-making while demonstrating tact and diplomacy

  • Experience with change management at the corporate level

  • Experience with risk management software and data analysis tools is highly desirable
