Reporting to the Director, Campus Planning, Design and Development, the Associate Director, Capital Planning and Asset Management will oversee all aspects of strategic campus and capital planning and space management for the University of Guelph campus.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Prepare project briefs for major capital projects and other major building additions or renovations related to the Campus Master Plan and space use and allocation
  • Perform needs assessments for determining actual facilities, land use and space characteristics; develop space utilization solutions to unique project planning, engineering, and administrative challenges
  • Coordinate the development of space inventory data; manage information to analyze current space and campus planning. Provide direction relating to space utilization
  • Oversee the development, enhancement, and ongoing maintenance of the space management database (Archibus). The incumbent will be fully responsible for accuracy of space data.
  • Represent the University on the Council of Ontario Universities Space Management Committee
  • Provide sector wide input and leadership relating to the development and analysis of space standards
  • Oversight of campus-wide facilities and systems condition assessment program, including the planning and prioritization of Capital Renewal and Major Maintenance (CRM) needs and projects. There is currently a $500 million plus backlog of requirements (2024 data and dollars)
  • Responsible for accurate preparation and timely submission of CRM and space utilization reports for government agencies including the Ministry of Colleges and Universities
  • Manage all aspects of the Capital Planning and Asset Management team including hiring, workload assignment, coaching, ongoing training, professional development, performance management, discipline including termination, and ensuring the implementation of any new safety programs, policies, and procedures. As of Spring 2025, the team consists of 4 employees and 1 vacant RFT position
  • Develop and lead cross-departmental initiatives and teams to maximize resources and expertise and to encourage innovation, teambuilding, and efficiencies. Examples: Capital Renewal Working Group, Space Advisory Committee and Capital Funding Development group

WHAT MUST YOU HAVE?

  • Master’s degree in planning, Architectural, Engineering, Facilities Management, Business Administration or similar
  • 9 years of experience specifically related to the management of multi-variable projects, space utilization, and infrastructure condition management
  • Intimate knowledge of post-secondary space and capital planning processes and methodologies
  • Strong leadership abilities, coupled with skilled negotiation abilities and innovative problem solving
  • Attentive listening, emotional intelligence and the ability to build rapport with numerous stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Strong computer and database background

WHAT WILL GIVE YOU THE EDGE?

  • Professional certifications such as OAA, P.Eng, PMP, BOMA, IFMA, APPA, or equivalent considered an asset
  • Computer skills related to design and space and asset management are highly desirable such as AutoCAD, Archibus, SLAM software, Microsoft Project, and KAHUA

The breadth and scope of this position is extensive. The University of Guelph (University) campus consists of approximately 1,000 acres of land and with 153 buildings totaling approximately 7.1 million gross square feet of floor area. Guelph is the 5th largest university in the Ontario system in terms of area.
