General Purpose
The University of Guelph is seeking an experienced IT Operations Manager to lead the IT team at our Ridgetown Campus. The role will oversee the delivery of integrated IT services that align with the University's IT ecosystem. This role requires broad technical knowledge across multiple IT domains, including network infrastructure, endpoint computing, servers, web, data security and privacy, technical support, audio/visual classroom technology, vendor management, and campus IT services related to student housing and hospitality.
Duties and Responsibilties
The IT Operations Manager will manage and perform day-to-day IT operations for the Ridgetown campus, ensuring all IT services operate efficiently and effectively. This includes coordinating maintenance and upgrades to prevent outages and disruptions, establishing and monitoring service level agreements to ensure high-quality service and user satisfaction, and implementing structured processes for incident resolution and root cause analysis. The manager will develop and manage change processes, ensuring effective communication and minimal disruption, and ensure documentation for operational procedures and processes. Additionally, the IT Operations Manager will assist with IT budget allocation and refresh for optimal resource use.
The role also involves overseeing a portfolio of IT projects in alignment with institutional standards, services, goals, and priorities. The manager will lead effective project planning, stakeholder engagement, requirements gathering, timelines, resources, and budgets. Tracking project progress and monitoring performance against milestones, reporting to Ridgetown leadership and Communications Services (CCS, the university's central IT department) management, and following best practices in project management and change management are key aspects of the role. Ensuring all projects and operations comply with institutional IT policies is essential.
Furthermore, the IT Operations Manager will lead and coordinate efforts of the IT team to set goals and objectives that align with priorities. Mentoring team members, providing opportunities for skill development, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement are important responsibilities. The manager will work closely with academic and administrative leadership to ensure IT projects align with their needs and objectives, and oversee relationships with external vendors and service providers involved in projects, ensuring quality and compliance.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
- Project management certification and technical IT certifications such as ITIL are an asset.
- Minimum of 6 years of related experience in a large, complex IT environment, including supervisory responsibility, project management, and technical experience across various IT domains.
- Experience in project management, product management, and process analysis and development.
- Knowledge of university policies, procedures, and collective agreements preferred.
- Prior experience supporting users in a large, complex, institutional IT environment.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, Visio or other UML diagramming software, and project management software such as Microsoft Azure DevOps and Microsoft Project.
- Strong leadership, product management, business analysis, project management, and change management skills.
- Ability to establish priorities and deliver strategic and tactical objectives.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong customer service focus and solution orientation.
- Ability to work well under pressure, meet established deadlines, and manage conflicting priorities.
- High degree of flexibility and mature adaptability.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
