Job Summary

Come work as a Manager, Clinical Risk Management with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Reporting directly to the Director, Risk Management, with a functional reporting relationship to the Regional Director, Client Relations and Risk Management, the Clinical Risk Manager is responsible for providing leadership in the management of operational risk for Vancouver Community of Care. The Clinical Risk Manager is responsible for supporting and implementing policies, procedures and practices which improve patient care and employee safety. The home work site is Vancouver Community.

As a Manager, Clinical Risk Management with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Provide leadership and support to senior leadership, physicians and staff in ensuring that risk management strategies and processes are used to identify, analyze and mitigate risks.
  • Advocate for and provide critical input into the planning, coordination and alignment of risk assessment processes.
  • Support the Regional Director of the Patient Care Quality Office to review and respond to escalated complaints that place VCH at increased risk exposure.
  • Support the Critical Incident Review process through facilitation, ensuring a systems approach and analysis is applied.
  • Provide consultative guidance and support as a subject matter expert to organizational committees, planning, operational and implementation groups.
  • Represent VCH in dealing with legal counsel, insurers and other external agencies in investigating and managing claims involving patients/clients or the organization.
  • Assist in the development of clinical risk registers to support strategic planning.
  • Develop effective systems, methods and supports to enable optimal management of administrative and operational risk, including the application of quality improvement strategies and processes, ensuring consistent application across the health authority.
  • Investigate claims, prepare risk assessments and status reports. Consult with Legal Counsel, participate in the preparation of court documents; consult with legal counsel and insurers. Monitor external legal expenses and reports of variances, providing remedial action and recommendations.
  • Consult and provide support and assistance to the CoC leadership and the Director, Risk Management in the investigation and handling of critical incidents and coroner issues.
  • Support and facilitate training and education of risk management issues including, risk assessments, disclosure of unexpected patient events etc.
  • Supervise support and/or administrative staff as applicable, ensuring a respectful and motivating environment in which individual competencies can thrive.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately report unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Clinical Health Care field or Health Care Administration or related discipline.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years’ recent, related experience in progressive leadership roles with responsibility for leading risk management and client relations issues or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and proactively coordinate strategies, systems, and processes to minimize risk to the organization through management of claims, providing risk advice and collaborating with others to proactively manage risk, and improve the quality and safety for VCH.
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical expertise to assess and support risk and situation management activities, and to establish and implement risk management and quality improvement strategies to support the organization.
  • Oversees, assists with, and/or conducts timely risk assessments in response to requests and consults with the appropriate leader concerning risk issues to support effective and timely remediation.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply superior judgment and political expertise to communicate sensitive information, and effectively persuade and negotiate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
