As an Indigenous Advisor, Recognition and People Experience with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:
- Report to the Manager, Recognition Programs and be accountable to the Indigenous Health team for related Indigenous workforce experience.
- Be responsible for providing expert advice and developing initiatives and processes that contribute to Indigenous workforce retention and to making VCH a great place to work.
- Support Indigenous employee experience across the lifecycle (from onboarding to retirement) creating innovative programs, processes, and services.
- Be an internal culture catalyst, initiative leader and facilitator committed to enhancing people experience through creating and enhancing recognition moments, and people-focused, culturally safe retention strategies.
- Create and provide tools and resources to support new and existing leaders, champions, and staff for culturally safe practices for appreciation, recognition, retention and engagement of Indigenous staff.
- This role maintains strong internal and external working relationships, working in partnership with Recognition, Onboarding & People Experience, and other People teams.
- Be responsible for identifying needs, conducting research, and advising on emerging trends and leading practices.
- Support feedback mechanisms (surveys, exit and internal movement conversations) for continual feedback and improvements to the employee experience, including Indigenous staff.
- Contribute significantly to achieving a seamless and effective onboarding and offboarding/transition process within the organization.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, or other relevant discipline.
- Five (5) years’ recent, related experience in a dynamic and diverse organization or an equivalent, combination of education, experience and training.
- Experience working with or for Indigenous organizations and/or programs and developing working relationships with Indigenous communities.
- In-depth understanding and knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety and Indigenous cultures within Vancouver Coastal Health’s service region.
- Pursuant to Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code, preference will be given to candidates identifying as Indigenous including First Nations, Metis, and Inuit.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-seeking groups, including those who experience intersectional barriers.
- Demonstrated expertise and experience in human resource/people and employee experience in complex organizational settings
- Demonstrated ability to provide senior advisory services and consultation to managers utilizing strong communication skills and the ability to educate, mentor, coach, facilitate, persuade and influence.
- Can quickly build strong relationships with internal partners, staff, and leaders.
- Applies an Indigenous-Centered Approach: Ground actions in Indigenous Rights, Cultural Values, and Traditional Protocols, ensuring that all initiatives respect and honour Indigenous perspectives. Maintain a proactive Indigenous-centered approach in all interactions and initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability in effective project management and utilization of communication and engagement channels and methods.
- Strong project management, prioritization and planning skills in the design and development of employee engagement strategies and initiatives.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- Applies superior judgment and political expertise to communicate sensitive information to, and collaborate with, a variety of internal and external partners.
- People person - appreciates and visibly supports all levels
- Uses facilitation skills for effective dialogue, solution-finding, and conflict resolution
- Fosters creativity and innovation in strategic planning involving cultural shifts and large-scale change.
As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
