Both are a half-time term positions, under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Indigenous Education, the Service Director of Indigenous Education shall be responsible for the administration and effective operations of Indigenous Education in Winnipeg School Division.
Start Date: December 2, 2024
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Provide leadership, direction, and common vision for Indigenous Education in Winnipeg School Division;
Within the Division’s Indigenous Education Policy, set goals and direction for Indigenous Education to provide appropriate educational programing for all students, with specific planning and intention for Indigenous student success;
Oversee comprehensive planning, coordination, development, and evaluation of the continuum of Indigenous programming, supports and services to meet the needs of students, families, and schools;
Identify general system needs related to staffing, programming, and learning environments as they pertain to restoring relationships, infusing Indigenous perspectives, and Indigenous student academic achievement;
Apply research and best practices informing learning design conducive to the needs of Indigenous students as well as supports environments providing approach to restoring relationships in the classroom;
Identify needs and lead the development, organization, and implementation of all program planning pertaining to the academic achievement of Indigenous students;
Identify needs and lead the development, organization, and implementation of all program planning pertaining to restoring relationships at all levels of the school system;
Demonstrate advocacy and commitment to continuous improvement and high achievement for Indigenous students;
Provide direction and support to schools in the establishment of a continuum of proactive, responsive, and intensive supports related to Indigenous student belonging, well-being, and mental health;
Develop models of support responsive to the specific needs of Indigenous students embedding Indigenous ways of knowing, being, living, and learning. Therefore build capacity in schools to understand and accommodate the needs of Indigenous learners;
Coordinate the process and allocation of the Indigenous Academic Achievement Grant for schools to support literacy and numeracy achievement for Indigenous students;
Collaborate with the Indigenous Education Team in supporting divisional initiatives such as the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, the Professional Network of Indigenous Educators, and the Cree and Ojibwe Bilingual Program
Coordinate and support land-based programming
Coordinate with support services (CSS, ISS, external organizations) to oversee the referral and processing procedures and eligibility for Indigenous students to access supports;
Manage the supervision, professional growth and evaluation of the Indigenous Education Team Staff;
Demonstrate cultural awareness, sensitivity, and equity to ensure Indigenous student needs are met;
Use and analyze data to drive decisions and guide to achieve the best student outcomes;
Collaborate and liaise with community agencies and organizations;
Provide ongoing assistance to all school staff and families;
Organize and facilitate professional development opportunities to build capacity of teachers and leaders to implement the Indigenous Education Policy and Mamahtawisiwin in meaningful, applicable, and relevant ways;
Lead and serve on divisional committees;
Demonstrate high standards of conduct, and a commitment to the Division’s strategic plan, vision, and continuous improvement planning;
Ensure open, transparent internal and external communications;
Maintain proper fiscal management of budget allocations.
Qualifications/Experience:
Valid Manitoba Teacher’s Certificate;
Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education and/or Masters in Education;
Minimum 5 years experience working in the field of Indigenous education, along with previous educational and leadership experience at the school and/or divisional level;
Minimum 5 years experience working with, and alongside Indigenous community and organizations;
Knowledge of and experience with programming for Indigenous students;
Lived experience and knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, living, and learning;
Demonstrated effective leadership of teams;
Successful experience with planning for system improvement and growth;
Exemplary communication, problem-solving, and team building skills;
An understanding of The Land, The People, and The Stories;
Exemplary technology, presentation, and group facilitation skills.
