Description
The Senior Manager, Fibre Engineering, will lead a team of network planners, technologists, and designers in planning Xplore’s FTTP access and transport networks. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of fibre networks, with a deep understanding of the technical and budgetary implications and trade-offs associated with design decisions. This role requires experience in project management, a strong understanding of fibre optic technology and telecommunications infrastructure, and the ability to work closely with internal and external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:• Lead the planning of Xplore’s fibre access and transport networks
• Model, simulate and analyze available data to develop design-build assumptions, regional-specific recommendations, material forecasts, and overall project cost
• Use engineering framework to develop network design plans for FTTP deployments
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to the engineering team, and manage the performance of direct reports
• Must be able to remain up to date with knowledge of current PON architecture, OSP design principles (GPON / FTTH, long-haul and HFW networks) and industry standards
• Ensure all engineering activities are performed in compliance with company policies, industry standards, and relevant regulations
• Maintain knowledge of technology in use and/or under development for its impact or potential impact on the FTTx access network
• Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers and technical staff
• Provide Fibre Engineering support to Xplore Business, Network Strategy & Build and Business Development
• Work with the Xplore National Standards team to review and develop fttx architecture for capital effectiveness and network optimization
• Employee may be asked to perform other ancillary or related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of Xplore
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience
• Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada would be an asset
• 10+ years of experience in telecommunications access network planning, outside plant engineering, and fibre optic technology
• Strong understanding of FTTP network architecture, cost economics, and optical network components
• Experience specifying and designing optical transport networks
• Comprehensive understanding of the FTTP network deployment process (planning, permitting, construction, and activation)
• Extensive experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the ability to utilize its data to analyze and identify strategic opportunities for FTTx deployment.
• Working knowledge of fibre construction methods and their impact on permits and project costs
• Proven experience in analyzing large datasets to identify and leverage strategic opportunities for organizational growth
• Proven project management experience, with the ability to lead and manage teams
• Ability to work in a dynamic environment, break constraints, and collaborate cross-functionally with strong verbal and written communication skills
• Knowledge of Safety Codes, Electric Codes, CSA standards, municipal bylaws, and power utility pole attachment requirements
