At the York Region District School Board we can offer you a challenging and rewarding career in public education. We support teachers in their commitment to ensuring student success. We recognize the key difference that teachers make in the lives of all learners. We are looking for strong, capable teachers who have the desire "to advance student achievement and well-being through public education, which motivates learners, fosters inclusion, inspires innovation and builds community". The skills, talents and dedication that you bring will make the system stronger in its ability to meet the learning needs of students today and well into the future.

By completing the French Language Assessment (FLA) online application, you are taking the first step towards joining an educational community that is committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to experience success. This application is for the French Language Assessment (FLA) process which assesses your French language proficiency to deem you qualified for French Immersion and French Core opportunities.

Candidates are encouraged to review the French Teaching Selection Process page on the Board website for additional information regarding Hiring Process, Resources, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

French Language Assessment Process Overview

The YRDSB French Language Assessment (FLA) is required for all candidates who would like to teach at York Region District School Board. The FLA is used to evaluate both the productive and receptive skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The assessment will determine if candidates have the language skills appropriate for the Board’s French program.

Should you be hired into a Long Term Occasional (LTO) assignment and/or Contract/Permanent position with the Board, in addition to completing the YRDSB FLA, candidates are encouraged to enroll or have completed their French as a Second Language (FSL), or equivalent, based on OCT qualifications to be hired for French positions with YRDSB.

The YRDSB FLA consists of the following:

Listening Comprehension - The language assessor reads aloud a few sentences while the candidates are expected to transcribe them, demonstrating overall comprehension by using proper use of grammar, punctuation etc.

Oral Expression - Candidates are expected to engage in spontaneous conversation on a variety of topics that will be presented by the Assessor.

Written Expression - Candidates are required to complete a written submission on a topic of general interest and a short multiple choice quiz that covers some foundational rules of French grammar.

Reading Comprehension - Candidates will be given a short reading text with Multiple Choice Questions.

Note: The FLA will take approximately one (1) hour to complete.

In preparation for the FLA, we encourage all candidates to review grammar rules, construction of sentences, and vocabulary. Please refer to the YRDSB French Resources page for additional information.

You must apply to any/all positions posted on Apply to Education (ATE), including other teaching opportunities. We encourage you to create job alerts for positions posted with the YRDSB on ATE, to not miss out on any opportunities of interest to you. The availability of positions is determined by system hiring needs and is continually reviewed throughout the school year.

If you are currently in the process of becoming qualified with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) (i.e. New Graduate, Internationally Trained Educator, etc.) we welcome you to apply to this posting prior to qualifications being confirmed on the OCT website. You would not be eligible to be added to the Occasional Teacher Roster until membership is confirmed.
