We are currently seeking a talented teacher/counselor to join the Golden Horn Elementary School team. GHES is located within the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council. We value experiential/place based learning on the land and inside the classroom. We strive to use the best research-driven teaching methods that foster learner agency and student-led learning experiences.

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education or equivalent

• Additional post-secondary coursework in related fields such as counselling and special education

• Strong knowledge of child development and trauma-informed practices in educational settings

• Experience providing support to students in emotional and behavioural areas

• Teaching experience at various grade levels across K-7

• Knowledge of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs, such as The Zones of Regulation and We Thinkers would be an asset

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications, skills, and knowledge, but also demonstrate suitability for the role and organizational culture:

• Ability to track student behaviour, assess needs, and triage appropriate supports, as well as assist in the development of relevant Student Support Plans (SSPs)

• Familiarity with restorative justice practices and collaborative problem-solving

• Commitment to ongoing professional development and inclusive practices

• Experience working with culturally diverse populations and promoting equity in school settings

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with students, staff, and families

Conditions of Employment

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

• Successful applicants will be required to undergo a security clearance including vulnerable sector check

• To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must be certified in another Canadian province/ territory first

• Yukon First Nations 101 to be completed within one year

Additional Information

• Candidates who possess qualifications, skills, and personal attributes that are appropriate for the assignment who do not hold a valid teaching certificate, at request, may be granted a letter of permission as a teacher issued in accordance with the Education Act

• If you are a permanent (indeterminate) teacher in a Yukon school, you will need to seek permission from your Superintendent to apply on this temporary job

Qualified applicants for teacher vacancies shall be hired based Article 49 Teacher Priority Hiring of the Yukon Association of Education Professionals Collective Agreement.
