Aecon Nuclear currently is undertaking efforts to replace key components at the Darlington and Bruce Power plants as a part of each respective Life Extension Program to allow operation for another 40+ years. The scope of work includes the removal and replacement of calandria tubes, pressure tubes, feeders, and steam generators as well as technical development, construction management and trade labour.

Aecon Nuclear is also currently at the forefront of the next generation of Nuclear Power in Canada developing the construction plan and manufacturing details for the SMR facility in Darlington.

The COE Welder Supervisor position is a salary position to support the Engineers in the Aecon Nuclear Centre of Excellence (COE) department. This department is responsible for three basic areas critical to welding within the company:

  • Developing, administering, and maintaining the welding program at a corporate level
  • Supporting new and in process project activities
  • Performing R&D, training, proposal work and supporting business development/proposals initiatives

Staying at the forefront of welding technology is key to ensuring that Aecon welding activities maintain the high level of quality that is required in the nuclear industry. Additionally, ensuring that Aecon leverages the latest available technologies to remain competitive in the marketplace will provide further confidence and opportunities for future business development. The welding center of excellence is a self-managed department which operates as a dedicated body within Aecon to be able to provide internal welding services to Aecon, as well as contract services to external customers.

What You'll Do Here

  • Supervise all shop activities in the Aecon Centre of Excellence shop space.
  • Assist welding Engineers in developing, troubleshooting, designing, testing and training with various types of welding processes and pieces of equipment.
  • Be able to perform welding activities with manual, mechanized and automated solutions to develop welding processes and complete welding PQR efforts according to CWB and ASME code standards.
  • Assist with the Aecon Nuclear welding school activities and classes (theoretical and hands on)
  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations within the COE welding facility.
  • Manage welding equipment, cranes, certifications, inspections, consumables stock, PPE, and other pertinent aspects required to operate day to day operations of the COE.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Welder Supervisor role is responsible to oversee all activities and personnel who are working within the COE facility. The relevant activities which take place within the COE include but are not limited to the following:

  • Welder qualification testing
  • Welder training
  • Completion of PQR, WPS and other procedural welding activities
  • Completion of process qualification and mockup welding activities
  • Completion of R&D related welding and manufacturing activities
  • Testing and analysis of welding coupons as required (cutting, bending, macro inspect etc.)
  • Modifications, maintenance and minor construction of welding machinery
  • Welding classes for both internal Aecon and external customers (welding theory and hands on activities)

What You Bring To The Team

  • Certificate of Qualification for arc welding
  • Ability to manually weld to high volumetric RT/UT standards with GTAW, SMAW and/or GMAW welding processes.
  • Minimum 10 years of industry welding experience with manual and/or mechanized welding arc processes.
  • Able to read and work off blueprints and fabrication drawings as well as understand Weld Symbols
  • Takes pride in work to strive for excellence and instill this mindset onto others.
  • Must have a passion for welding.
  • Have a willingness to mentor other welders and trainees.
  • Practices a strong safety culture.
  • Must have a positive attitude to develop and test new solutions to solve a variety of technical welding issues.
  • The ability to think out of the box is an asset.
  • Must have experience with hand tools, grinders, etc.
  • Upon request, Welding Applicants may be required to perform a preliminary weld test prior to employment to demonstrate their talent.
  • Membership within a local trade union is an asset but not a requirement. (i.e., local trade union UA 527 or Boilermakers union.)
  • Familiar with welding principles is preferred. (Basics of arc welding, types of welding etc.)
  • Familiar with robotics or comparable semi-automated and mechanized machinery is an asset.
  • Results oriented, takes ownership of tasks assigned.
  • Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to be able to work on and maintain basic welding equipment
  • Up to date overhead crane and forklift certs would be an asset
  • Willingness to want to continuously learn, try new approaches, experiment with new technologies and push the envelope related to welding, manufacturing, machinery and tooling development.
  • Knowledge to develop weld related tooling and equipment is an asset.
  • Knowledge to operate mechanized and robotic equipment is an asset.
