The scope of responsibility for the Senior Manager, International Network Planning is to define, develop, and grow Air Canada’s international route network and fleet deployment in accordance with corporate objectives for profitability, growth, and competitive market position. The main responsibility is to lead, develop and execute strategic network initiatives to minimize cost and maximize revenues of the entire International Network. In addition, the position involves being responsible for Air Canada’s relationships with various external stakeholders including joint venture partners and international airports. The position is strategic, relationship and analytical driven. It requires excellent leadership, decision-making skills as well as a very solid understanding of the overall commercial strategy. It also requires working closely with leaders of various areas within the company such as Scheduling, Revenue Management, Alliances, Sales, Finance and Legal. The position requires managing a team.

Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with the Director, International Network Planning & Alliance Valuation, and the Sr Director, International Network & Alliances to establish and execute strategies to maximize profitability of the entire international network.
  • Lead the team and assume all responsibility for network profitability and operational feasibility. 
  • Contribute in sessions with the EVP, Revenue & Network Planning, and the VP, Intl Affairs, Network & Partnerships, to a) establish the network strategy for each IATA season and b) create the longer term 2-5 year network planning strategy.
  • Lead the network planning relationship with current and future joint venture partners. 
  • Lead the monitoring of competitors and decide on the appropriate competitive response to defend Air Canada’s market position.
  • Effectively liaise with all internal stakeholders including with leaders in RM, Alliances, Sales to ensure that the international strategy is clearly understood for a successful execution of the network vision.
  • Oversee the optimization of the hub traffic flows, balancing commercial objectives and operational constraints.
  • Lead the identification and evaluation of new market/route opportunities for international expansion and growth.
  • Lead the new routes process by effectively liaising with internal stakeholders including leaders in Legal, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing and Corporate Communications. 
  • Ensure that the entire widebody fleet of Air Canada is deployed efficiently to maximize asset utilization.
  • Coordinate between the Strategy, International Network Planning, and Scheduling teams to ensure a coherent commercial strategy across the different planning timelines.
  • Oversee the development and training of the team reporting to the role, ensuring their proficiency with all tools and processes, honing their strategic thinking and presentation skills, and ensuring their visibility across the organization.
  • Ensure all processes and procedures for competitive monitoring, hub optimization, and evaluation of network opportunities are efficient and effective and approve/implement the necessary modifications if/when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree and 5+ years of combined experience in the commercial branch of an airline and 3+ years minimum experience as a successful Manager in Network Planning
  • Strong experience and expertise leading and collaborating with cross-functional teams at all levels from individual contributors to executives
  • Excellent communication abilities, both written and oral, including experience in presenting and speaking publicly to represent Company interests.
  • Highly analytical, strong quantitative skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the international competitive environment and the latest market trends 
  • Team player with strong drive and first-rate project management skills
  • Superior Word, Excel and PowerPoint capability 
  • Knowledge of NetLine/Plan, DiioMI, DDS, Schedule Manager
