Red Deer Regional Hospital has an exciting opportunity for Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) in their very busy Adult Psychiatric Unit. The Assistant Head Nurse is a pivotal leadership role which provides clinical direction and supervision to staff, supporting and enhancing safe patient care, and ensure timely access to services. The AHN will develop positive working relationships with physicians, staff, and management, other departments within RDRHC, community of Red Deer, and rural sites within Central zone. The AHN identifies system issues for bed capacity and patient flow within the Adult Psychiatry Unit at RDRHC and between all other facilities and works to resolve them by removing system barriers to facilitate a smooth discharge for patients on a daily basis. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgement, recent leadership experience, and clinical experience and exemplary communication skills will be essential to making you successful in this role. This role provides coaching and mentorship to all staff, including new employees and will be expected to have an effective and collaborative working relationship with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, administrators and policy makers. The AHN will troubleshoot and solve difficult and complex system issues, playing a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care. Red Deer is located in Central Alberta near the midpoint of the Calgary-Edmonton corridor and is surrounded by Red Deer County. It is Alberta’s third most populous city- after Calgary and Edmonton with just over 100,000 citizens. As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum 2 years’ experience in the past 5 years in Adult Psychiatry. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024.
