Family Counsellor - Shared Care Consultant

This is an advanced clinical position responsible for providing assessment, treatment and follow-up, consultation/collaboration, and referral services adults and couples presenting with varied and complex mental/behavioral health needs. In addition, the consultant teaches these skills to family physicians within an innovative interdisciplinary primary care mental health service. Given the complexity of patients referred to the Family Counsellor - Shared Care Consultant by the primary care provider this position requires advanced clinical skills. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As a Family Counsellor, you will provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up to clients and their families. You will also provide clinical focused consultation with other programs or community resources and acts as a liaison to develop and promote preventative health programs in the community. You will collaborate with other health care providers and community service providers to ensure a continuum of care in the community.

Completion of master's degree in a health related field. Active or eligible for registration with the applicable Alberta regulatory college.

Minimum of master’s degree required from Social Work, Psychology, or Nursing. Must be registered and in good standing with applicable professional association or college. Must be authorized to perform psychosocial interventions. Minimum of 10 years post-degree demonstrated experience and excellence in assessment and treatment of mental health and behavioral health disorders. Minimum of 1 year experience in community-based primary care settings with family physicians. Training and experience in individual, couple and family therapy modalities. Superior knowledge and experience working in collaborative care environments providing a full range of services including assessment, treatment, education, research, evaluation and clinical leadership. Extensive training and experience in implementing evidenced-based interventions and principles of change theory. Proven ability to effectively establish collaborative relationships; coach, consult, develop capacity and teach mental health and counselling knowledge and skills to family physicians through application of principles of adult learning. Sound clinical and professional judgement, strong interpersonal and social skills, excellent verbal and written skills, computer skills and knowledge. Travel is required in within and around Calgary and area; position target South Calgary and the rural communities but not limited to Okotoks, Nanton, Black Diamond, and High River.

Superior knowledge of the mental health system, services and resources and ability to facilitate referrals of primary care provider’s patients. Knowledge of DSM-V and medications used in the treatment of mental health conditions. Self-directed, innovative, flexible and capable of working both autonomously and in collaboration with health professionals.
