The UAH Medicine Relief Team at the University of Alberta Hospital provides relief (float) staff to 13 Medicine units providing care for General Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pulmonary, Nephrology, GI and Hematology patients. The Medicine program is a dynamic and fast paced adult acute care program dedicated to best practice in providing patient and family centered care. Care is delivered by an interdisciplinary collaborative care team in accordance with the AHS Values, hospital policies and nursing care standards. Specific Accountabilities: As a member of the collaborative, interdisciplinary team, the Health Care Aide is responsible for providing patient care services under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Health Care Aides within the medicine program participate in the delivery of quality patient care by providing services necessary for the physical and emotional well-being and comfort of the patient. Your duties will include, but are not limited to, assisting in the delivery of quality patient care to meet patient’s hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs by obtaining and documenting height and weight, assisting with ADLs, lifting, transferring, and mobilizing patients, transporting patients, equipment and specimens to other areas of the hospital, as well as maintaining the inventory of supplies. You will also assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, families, staff and visitors by gathering and cleaning equipment and maintaining an environment free of obstacles and clutter. Physical demands of the job involve periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, twisting, walking, and lifting weights up to 25 kg.

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.

Health Care Aide Certificate required. Graduation from a recognized education program required. Medical Terminology course required. Current BCLS-HCP certification required, current CPR must be clearly indicated in your application, including the expiry date. Basic computer and email skills required. English language proficiency (verbal and written). Interpersonal, organizational and time management skills. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the interdisciplinary team. Ability to perform job duties independently while working in collaboration with team members. Ability to adapt quickly to changing and fluctuating workloads and work conditions. Experience working within a Medicine acute care practice setting within the last 2 years preferred. Experience working in a casual or float position preferred. Experience working within the CoACT framework preferred. Given the fast-pace and dynamic nature of this team, the availability and flexibility to pick up a wide variety of day, evening, night, weekend, and short-notice shifts is preferred.
