Health Information Management Professional I

Reporting to the Supervisor, Calgary/South Zone. The Specialist is responsible for processing requests for health information. Requests are received for health information from individual and third party stakeholders both internal and external to Alberta Health Services. The A & D Specialist also manages and processes production orders, subpoenas, search warrants and court orders as issued by the judicial system. Access & Disclosure Specialists must give full attention to detail and recognize the importance of adhering to legislative requirements including the Health Information Act (HIA), other related legislation and established Alberta Health Services (AHS) standards, policies, guidelines and procedures. This includes accessing health information in multiple formats - paper, electronic and microfilm. The individual must maintain a high standard of quality ensuring the correct information is released within established turnaround times.

As a Health Information Management Professional I, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting data from clinical records, release of information and/or data quality assurance. In accordance with AHS procedures and the Health Information Act, you will gather, retrieve, collate, code, design, analyze, interpret clinical and demographic data and perform statistical reporting and regular data quality reviews for patient records.

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Ability to provide a high level of customer service. Ability to analyze, problem solve and make discretionary decisions in compliance with provincial and federal legislation, AHS policy, and AHS Legal & Privacy. Technical aptitude for information systems, computer applications, and navigating between multiple electronic sources. Technical aptitude for computer applications, such as: Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, Adobe. Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a high volume, high paced and ever-changing work environment. English language skills in reading, writing and comprehension and effective oral and written communication required. Must be self-motivated and independent. Must possess conflict management skills. Possess a high level of decision making and critical thinking skills.

Graduate of an approved school for Health Information Management professionals. CHIMA Certified and must be in good standing. CHIM professional with minimum 1-3 years access and disclosure experience within a complex health care environment. Keyboarding skills with a minimum typing speed of 45 wpm. A typing test and an assessment based on HIA will be administered for selected candidates.
