An exciting opportunity exists for a temporary Senior Analyst in the Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR), Cancer Advanced Analytics, Cancer Research and Analytics Team. The ACR is a population-based registry that records and maintains data on all new cancer cases and cancer deaths occurring in the province and is mandated by the Regional Health Authorities Cancer Registry regulation. Accurate and reliable cancer data is essential for cancer surveillance and research as well as planning and evaluating cancer care programs to improve patient care. The registry is a crucial starting point for many teams within Cancer Research and Analytics as it provides accurate, comparable and timely data used by epidemiologists, statisticians, researchers, and healthcare providers. This is a temporary position funded by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer to work on a planning project for the modernizing of the Alberta Cancer Registry process and workflows in line with the Pan-Canadian Cancer Data Strategy to improve timeliness of case ascertainment. The successful candidate will be a driven and self-motivated professional with a commitment to quality improvement and change management. Using knowledge of health systems, computer science, and best practices, the senior analyst will be required to collaborate with many partners both internal and external to AHS. Strong project management skills, critical thinking, problem solving and taking initiative will be key in leading opportunities for improvement within the Alberta Cancer Registry. The successful Senior Analyst may work out of Edmonton’s Seventh Street Plaza or Calgary’s Arthur Child with option to telework. The ACR is within Cancer Advanced Analytics, who are responsible for creating the infrastructure and capacity to optimize the collection, interpretation and use of cancer data to support clinical teams, quality improvement, and cancer research for better cancer outcomes and experiences. The ACR is seeking a motivated Senior Analyst professional to work with their cancer registry operations team in a planning project for the modernization of the Alberta Cancer Registry processes and workflows. The Senior Analyst will be responsible for assess creative and innovative approaches such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to bring about change management to achieve timelier case ascertainment and cancer staging. The planning project will explore options using data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to extract information from pathology reports to auto-populate the Alberta Cancer Registry. Timelier case ascertainment and cancer staging helps support real-time decision-making, serving as an early indicator for future planning, faster responses to challenges in cancer systems, and enhances efficiencies across health partners. This will enable the Cancer Advanced Analytics teams to utilize robust and timely data to support operations and planning. The incumbent must meet with key stakeholders to get required background and develop a project scope and requirements for the project. This includes working closely with other ACR team members, other departments within AHS (IT and APL) and collaboration with other provincial and territorial cancer registries and external partners to share progress and learnings. Using a high level of technical expertise combined with an excellent understanding of the data systems in Cancer Care Alberta will be required to develop a project plan to improve the sustainability and timelines of cancer case ascertainment.

A science or health related master’s degree with strong quantitative component in a related field, e.g., epidemiology, statistics, health informatics, computer science, computer engineering or related field.

Minimum five years experience in the following areas: Demonstrated experience with change management and leading process improvement projects in a professional environment. Demonstrated ability to foster relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Project management experience including managing concurrent projects and meeting deadlines. Experience with health system data. Additional Required skills: Proficiency in English, with excellent communication skills and ability to interact with clients by presenting findings in business- and user-friendly language. Demonstrated ability for critical thinking skills and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Visio and Access) and the ability to become proficient with new software packages. Must abide by the highest standards of confidentiality and have a sound understanding of the principles within Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, as well as the Health Information Act.

Work experience specific to business analysis activities including working closely with business to assess requirements and make recommendations, research solutions and evaluate impacts. Strong understanding or experience of applied AI/ML projects including data mining concepts and techniques. Experience working with oncology data. Experience with Python.
