Description
The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse who is prepared at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. The Cardiology NP demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in the area of medical and surgical critical care as well as the diagnosis and differential diagnosis, advanced assessment skills and treatment surrounding patients as part of the critical care outreach team. The Cardiology NP role integrates aspects of nursing and medicine to facilitate the transition of cardiology. Collaboration between these two disciplines is a key component of the Cardiology NP role and utilizing the interdisciplinary team is vital to providing comprehensive care to patients. Providing access to care is a key access of the Cardiology NP role. Care is provided through knowledge in advanced practice assessment skills, pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics. These capabilities allow for the development of differential diagnoses and further interventions. The role of the Cardiology NP will help provide continuity of care to more complex patients and provides continuity as part of the interdisciplinary team to patients and their families. The role also includes time for research and education. Education for bedside Registered Nurses (RNs) and rotating medical residents is a key component of this NP role. In addition, NP practice standards must be met according to the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program and a minimum of master's degree. Registration with CRNA on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Recent NP experience in an acute care setting. Must be able to support flexible work schedule. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to enable working directly with patients and their family members. Ability to work as a collaborative member of a team. Ability to function independently while still being in a supported position for the first year of this role. Excel at working in a dynamic fast paced environment. Work effectively under pressure and stressful situations.
Recent (within the last 12 months) clinical nursing experience in cardiology or adult Internal medicine. ACLS certification. Application and knowledge of current research. Involvement in research and ongoing interest in research.
