As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Demonstrates proficiency in Connect Care and ability to manage referrals successfully and ability to multitask in high acuity, fast paced environment dealing with multiple competing demands. Minimum 2 years of fulltime experience in Emergency Department or Intensive Care unit as a unit clerk. Must have a general understanding of Emergency Department, and how to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary team members during high pressure emergencies. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills through computer, verbal and written means in a professional and mature manner. Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team environment with conflict management skills. Demonstrates ability to liaise between multidisciplinary team and assist staff members. You will be consulted multiple times a day to help find information that connects team members with external resources therefore you must demonstrate an ability to critically think within your scope. Proven ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates ability to establish positive and professional relationships with patients and families. Must be able to bend down and pick up 10-15lbs multiple times a day, to move from sit to standing, twist and reach up above shoulder height in frequent motions multiple times.
Can demonstrate involvement in a working group to better a department. Experience working in triage as a unit clerk. Demonstrates proficiency in faxing / sharing confidential information to external units and clinics either through connect care or fax. Demonstrates ability to appropriately scan hard copies of patient records into digital patient records. Familiarity with IFT, iRequest, e-facilities, ESP, and Netcare.
