The Team:
The Policy Team in the Sustainable Resource Management section of the Forest science Planning and Practices Branch is an agile group of four professionals in the Ministry of Forests that develop, improve, maintain, and oversee the legislative, regulatory and policy framework associated with the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA). Through their work, the policy team has a real impact on how forest resources are managed in BC. The Role:
The Policy Team Lead is responsible for providing leadership and senior professional advice and expertise on the development of provincial policy, standards and guidance to support the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) framework, including the FRPA improvement initiative. This position champions and advises on refinements to FRPA policies, regulations, provincial standards and functions as the provincial specialist. In this role, you will work collaboratively with other teams in the branch to facilitate the creation and implementation of new regulations, policies and other guidance materials.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Registered as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (Forest Professionals BC, BC Institute of Agrologists, Engineers and Geoscientists BC), or able to transfer a current, related membership to the applicable BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
- Master’s Degree in planning, policy, public administration, natural resource management, or a related discipline (e.g., forestry, agrology, etc.) and three (3) years’ recent (within the past four (4) years), related experience; OR,
- Bachelor’s Degree in planning, policy, public administration, natural resource management, or a related discipline (e.g., forestry, agrology, etc.) and five (5) years’ recent (within the past six (6) years), related experience.
Recent, related experience must include:
- Providing expert advice, guidance and leadership regarding natural resource management or land use related policies, standards and methodologies to senior executives (e.g., Minister, Deputy Minister or equivalent).
- Leading consultations and policy reviews with internal and external partners/specialists to gather input on complex natural resource management or planning issues; and to recommend regulatory changes consistent with government priorities.
- Preparing reports and documents to support decision making (e.g., Cabinet Submissions, position papers, proposals and reports).
Preference may be given to candidates with recent, related experience in one (1) or more of the following:
- Engaging and collaborating with First Nations to address natural resource forest management related issues.
- Experience leading forest stewardship initiatives.
- Experience developing natural resource related policies.

This position can be based in any office of the Ministry of Forests. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
